I'm considering Puget Sound but I was wondering about the area. I've heard there is a lot of crime, and was wondering how bad really is it? I was also wondering what neighborhoods are good and how is it living there while going to college?

We have visited twice, summer and winter and our daughter will attend Fall 2011. It is situated in a nice residential area, lots of single family homes. Close-ish to downtown Tacoma, we drove around but didn’t find any really sketchy areas. Loved the school.

My dad lives in Seattle and when I visit we go to Tacoma often. There are definitely some sketchy areas in Tacoma… although there are some great areas as well. My S will be applying to UPS next Fall. The area around the school is beautiful. Tacoma sometimes has a bad reputation, but it is very close to Seattle and the Puget Sound is AMAZING!! My S and I really liked the vibe of the school when we visited a year ago.

We visited last weekend for admitted students day, my 2nd visit. The area around the school seems very safe. We were told that South Tacoma is the sketchy area. Drove around the area near campus quite a bit and my only concern really is that it seems kind of boring, all residential. Some students told us they go to 6th st. a few blocks away for restaurants and “night life”. The area seems safe to me.
