For next semester, I've enrolled in:

-Data Structures
-Calculus II
-Intro to Linear Algebra
-Physics I
-Physics I lab
-College Writing
-Intro to Unix

The first 5 are actual courses, and the last one is just a 6 week, 1 credit course to introduce students to working with Unix systems and tools.

I was wondering whether this sounds doable in one semester. I am also planning to get a part time job at the university help desk, but only on the weekends. I have heard that programming assignments in Data Structures require a lot of time and that taking 3 additional mathy/technical courses would put a lot of stress on me.

As a point of reference, I'm attending UMass Amherst.

How many hours in total is this (not including the last one)? I’ve taken all 4 of the courses you listed at my school (Texas) but not in the same semester. I remember the programming assignments in my Data Structures course took a good amount of time. The Calculus and Linear Algebra were pretty standard workloads for math courses for me. Physics at my school was a killer. It had a lot of homework from both lecture and lab, very low class averages on exams, and a one credit hour lab that met for 3 hours. It was engineering physics. I’d personally be dead with a schedule like that. If it turns out that you have a very easy physics professor then maybe it’s possible. Is it important that you take Linear Algebra this semester? How late does your drop deadline go to? You may be able to start the semester and then drop Linear Algebra or something if you find out before the drop deadline that you aren’t going to have enough time.

Hi SadHippo, I would be spending a total of 15 hours and 50 minutes per week without the last 1 credit course. I’m doing a double major in math, so I thought taking linear algebra this semester would be a good idea, so that I could take the higher level courses sooner. I guess I’ll just see how it is and drop it before the drop deadline if it is too much, like you said

Honestly this is a terrible schedule. It will do you no good to flame out. I would save the linear alg for next semester at the least. Stick to 4 classes. Remember that midterms and finals will be all at the same time and that won’t be fun.

Stick to four class. Wouldn’t you rather do really well in four than mediocre in five? You could always do summer classes. May I ask what classes you took this semester?
