Is this allowed in MIT? I realised for courses like 10 there're so many prereqs, and each is only offered either in the spring or in the fall. Is it possible to graduate in 3 years from course 10B, and how does anyone do it? Just curious- thanks!

In my experience, prereqs are just sort of suggestions rather than hard and fast rules -- I've taken several classes concurrently with their prerequisites, or even without having taken the prerequisites.

Obviously, this is difficult, and can be exceedingly difficult depending on which class you're talking about (I wouldn't, for example, suggest taking 7.05/5.07 without 5.12, or taking 7.06 without 7.05/5.07).

I think there is a credit limit only in the first year, so you should be able to take on multiple subjects from the second year.

Oh, and I should say that for some classes, the prereqs are strictly enforced -- you emphatically cannot take 7.02 without having taken 7.01x or having gotten a 5 in AP bio. So sometimes you have to ask the professor.

As they say in MIT, (almost) everything is negotiable. Even those classes that supposedly have "hard" prereqs can sometimes be 'surreptitiously accessed'. I knew a guy who took 15.545 (Mergers & Acquisitions), which is one of the most advanced MBA finance courses taught at Sloan, yet he had never taken a single finance course before in his life, despite the fact that 15.545 has a long string of finance prereqs. Basically, he tried out a few lectures to see how hard the class was, and when he determine that he could handle the class, he simply got it added through an Add/Drop form. In fact, I think he ended up taking the entire Sloan MBA finance sequence "backwards" - he took the advanced courses first, and then finished up with the basic courses.

Wow thanks - what about doing 10.301(fluid mechanics) and 10.37 *chemical kinetics and reactor design) in the same semester?

Thanks=)

it's ok to do 5.112 and 5.12 at the same time if you know 1/3 of 5.12 already right?

There is a quiz on the current 5.12 page which purports to tell you whether or not you are adequately prepared for 5.12: http://web.mit.edu/5.12/www/Spring05/handouts/s_2005bkgquiz.pdf

But if you already know a great deal about general chemistry, why not just take the chemistry advanced standing exam rather than taking 5.12 and 5.112 concurrently?

and as an added bonus, if you pass the 5.111 advanced standing exam, you get the opportunity to take a 5.12 advanced standing exam too. (what fun!)

The problem is - I'm more confident about 5.12 than 5.11! It's possible to do both classes together anyway right?

I've never heard of it being done. It's true, as sakky says above, that most "hard and fast rules" are at least somewhat negotiable. However, course 5 has been, in my experience, a very anal department which doesn't like to bend rules. If nothing else, you could email the undergraduate course administrator and see if they would allow it. Personally... I wouldn't count on them allowing it.

darn - but it doesn't make much sense though - 5.12 can be studied without much knowledge from 5.111=( oh well thanks!

hi hopefulgal,at my univ i take both pres' and major courses and i do well,If its necessary u take this classes, pls do

Where can I get info on the 5.111 advanced standing exam?

thanks mollie - is is also really hard to get past a lottery for say, 7.02? have any freshmen ever been allowed to do that class? Thanks!

Wow 5.12 looks way easier than 5.111.

Are you planning to lottery into 7.02 for fall term or spring term?

It seems to me that spring term is more heavily subscribed, because a lot of course 7 sophomores take other classes in the fall. So I think it would be easier to get in as a freshman in the fall.

As for spring, were you considering doing sophomore standing? Because then you would be mostly ok, since you would be considered to be a sophomore.

This spring there were about 140 spots in the class, and I think about 20ish sophomores got lotteried out. So as a sophomore in the spring, your chances are pretty good... not entirely sure about freshman in the fall, but my bet is that the chances are at least halfway decent.

wow ok thanks mollie! I'm planning lottery into 7.02/10.702 for the fall term - if I don't manage to, then I'll do it in the spring. Btw do you have the textbook "Introduction to Genetic Analysis" for 7.03? Is it really essential and helpful? Thanks a million=)

Yeah amrik I agree! 5.12 looks much nicer than 5.111! And yet we don't seem to be able to take both classes in the same semester! sniff

No, my year we used a different textbook. I'll ask around though -- my year the textbook was exceedingly unhelpful, but maybe the new one they're using is worth the money.
