Taking a class at SMC

I'm a first year at El Camino College, planning to transfer to UCLA in Fall '06 under Geography and Political Science majors. However, my college doesn't offer all the required classes. I know that UCLA will understand this, but will I still have to take thoses classes at UCLA? I checked out taking Poli Sci 7 at SMC and it sounds pretty good, but I don't quite understand the parking situation. $75 for a parking permit!? And what's with the "free parking shuttle" that they offer? I know many of you attend SMC and could offer some advice. I live in the South Bay (Torrance), so is it too far a commute for one class? Is it worth taking it before transferring since I want to finish ASAP with 2 UCLA degrees? Thanks for your help.

Torrance is not that far from smc or southwest college. You are going to have to commute sooner or later what about when you go to ucla? I think your best chance at getting into ucla is to attend smc who holds the highest rate of ucla transfers and will offer all the required classes to ucla. You say in your post that you know ucla will understand your situtation but I wouldn't count on it I'd play it safe try to schedule all my classes for tuesdays and thursdays at smc so I will only commute those two days out of the week and finish in two years (highly possible for poli sci) $75 is a bargain when you compare this to other cc and ucla's parking permits.

smc students here.

Green

Free shuttle is if u want to park at the airport campus for free, and then they will provide a bus for free for u which will take u to the main campus. It goes every 15 mins.

I never used that service way too inconvinient for me.

THe parking does cost 75 dollars, the parking situation is horrendous if u have a morning class. Most of the times u will spend an hour looking for parking and might not even find it. There are 2 parking lots, one of them is around 3 levels, the other one is 6. Still can't find parking.

U can park 10-15 mins away on the street, and there is always parking there for free. it's on a street called ashland. If u need directions to it, i can help u out.

BE SURE to look at ratemyprofessors.com b4 u take a class. I am very familiar w/ pol scie here, i've taken two classes. Pol scie 7 is taught by Buckley, who is hard, read his reviews. Chalada i am not too familiar, but i hear he is hard.

I took Pol scie 51 w/ kurvink, who was pretty easy. Pol philos class. Meets once a week at night w/ parking opportunities, which i recommed.

There is also pol sci online 7, and ur schools won't know or care, it's online class, if u have the work ethic u might wanna look into that.

SMC is real crowded school. just be ready.

Mex, I have a GTO with UCLA so I'm not too worried about admissions. I also plan to live on campus; the commute to West LA from the South Bay is horrendous. However, I am concerned about being able to finish in 2 years without all the lower division requirements finished, especially if I want to try for another BA.

High, I think the Fall 05 Poli Sci 7 class is with Buckley. His reviews on ratemyprofessor.com seem pretty average, but I guess I don't really have a choice. My major requirements are 4 of the following 5: US Politics, Comparative, World Politics, International Relations, Economy. I've taken the first two, and intend to take IR at El Camino next fall. So it's either World Politics and Political Economy- which do you suggest? Personally, I'd rather take World, since Economy doesn't really appeal to me. Have you taken an online class at SMC before? That would be most convenient, but I don't know if I have the discipline to self-study. I have some friends to went to SMC for their first year, but are transferring to El Camino next year (it's down the street from my high school) mainly because of parking and traffic. I guess it would be worth it if I took 2 classes at SMC? Thanks!

Well....

I have taken 2 online classes, but every class is different. Some teachers give u unlimited time for ur online tests, some don't. Some give u a lot of stuff like essays, etc, some give u just several online tests.

The two that i have taken were awesome b/c it was unlimited amount of time to take the test, i check my notes and go to lunch then finish that sucker up.

No idea how pol sci online goes.

i do know that u will be assigned some pages to read in the book and u will be responsible for them. Everything is usually self taught and boring. But does save the commute and provides time flexibility,

no idea which class to select 7 or 21. Didn't take either.
Do know that buckely has a bad rep on campus. Every few get A in the class, if thats what u're after. It should NOT be ur #1 choice.

I do know that if u're a pol sci major, u will have to take pol sci 51. check on assist.org I did take that class, and really liked the teacher and it was pretty easy. Good schedule too w/ kurvink.

But again the best thing to do is check out every teacher w/ retemyprof, if everyone dislikes the teacher, stay away. I learned that the hard way.

Those classes are all a lot more dificult that Pol Scie 1 and 2 which are intros, so be prepared to do quite a bit of work.
