Taking a Gap Year at USC

I think I read an undergraduate can take 5 years to complete the courses in order to graduate with a degree. I wonder if anyone considered taking a year off to work during the 4 years? I am sure it could be done, but what do you think are the positives and negatives? The positive for a parent would be the student can contribute more towards his tuition expenses by working for a year. The positive for the student is if he can find a paid internship in his field for a year he can do it without taking away from class time.

Any comments on taking this route?

Use summers for paid internships. I finished my freshman year in May and I have a paid internship at an engineering firm this Summer. They even want me to work during the school year and bring me back for next Summer. I probably won't be able to work during the school year due to my schedule, but I'll definitely consider them for next Summer.

I would never want to take a year off because I'd like to graduate with my friends.
