Hey, I just finished my junior year and I'm going to be graduating next year in 2013. I want to take a gap year between senior year and college, I would be volunteering internationally.
Two of my teachers already told me that they would write me a recommendation and my counselor agreed also. But if I take a gap year, should I send the recommendations at the same time as others who aren't taking a gap year?
Also, how do I apply for a university? Is there anyway for them to postpone me starting in fall of 2013 to fall of 2014?
Or should I just apply next year?
Thank you for any help!!!

You can do either, however since you will be international during your gap year it will be easier to apply with your peers next year. When you choose a university next spring simply contact them and ask to have your entrance delayed one year. They may ask you what you will be doing during that time, they want to know it’s something productive, so it’s nice if you have something written up. This is more and more common so most universities are very used to these requests now.

Here’s a thread from the parent’s forum about gap years. You might PM some of the parents if you have specific questions. I’m sure they’d be more than happy to help.

Oh okay, thank you!!
And what about scholarships? You can’t postpone those, can you? Then should I look at them after I graduate rather than before?
