Last time I took the ACT I got a 34.25

English: 35
Math: 36
Reading: 33
Science: 33

I was disappointed because usually I get 36 in reading and a 35 in Science. I'm not sure what the deal is. The science passage was a bit confusing, but they usually are. I really don't know what happened with Reading.

Does anyone have any advice as to what I can do to improve Reading and Science scores? I'm out of Official ACT tests to take. I've taken the 2 available from ACT Online Prep. I bought the Princeton Review ACT book, which was absolutely TERRIBLE. The grammar section had the underlinings printed in between lines and over text. Science section was also really badly written. Does anyone have suggestions for a good ACT book?

You have a 34 that is already 99 percentile
2a. Why exactly do you want a 36, bragging rights?
2b. If its the be more competitive for college, you shouldn't waste your time because you won't get in or be denied to any college based on the difference between a 34 and a 36 on the ACT.

The only thing I can tell you is that just pay more attention to the questions and you will probably get the 36 as I am sure you know what you are doing.

If you need a new book get Barron's I bought it on Amazon for 4 bucks including shipping and handling.

I heard Barron's is unrealistically hard. I feel like the Reading is going to be all luck. Sometimes there's just things that you won't know. I don't think there's anything you can do to prep more than you already have.

Science, hmm... I'd say go to a local bookstore. (B&N) and go through their books and just read as many science passages (in the ACT books) as you can. Hopefully that will give you the full range of possibilities.

I'm not doing this for bragging rights, lol. That'd be a bit odd...

I want to apply to direct med programs. The 2 point difference would have a significant effect. Also, a 36 would be good for getting scholarships and such.

haha quadomatic. we had almost the exact subscores :) I'm also retaking in September, but i don't really know how to improve.

My highest score is a 34 exactly:
E: (in order, 35, 36, 35)
M: (in order, 35, 36, 35)
R: (in order, 33, 31, 32)
S: (in order, 30, 27, 34)

As you can see my science score is fluctuating a LOT. But when I took it in April, it grew a lot, and I think so because I almost finished AP Chemistry and AP Physics, both of which helped me comprehend graphs better and quicker. But now I'm aiming for atleast a 35 (hopefully a 36) so that I can get STAR student at my school. I also finished all the practice tests available to me and I don't know what else to do. I was planning on just winging it, but I want to make sure that I get 36's in atleast math and english, and enough scores to help me get a 35 or a 36 in the other two subjects. I'm really stumped on how to do this...

Also, is the June test really easier than other tests? If so, will it be easier for me to get a 35 or 36?

disclaimer: getting a 36 is cool, but very annoying. be prepared for interviews - and lots of them, especially if it is a rare occurrence in your school/state.

i feel for you man..it must be terrible to have a 34 lol

Hey I managed to get a 36 on the June ACT... what do you mean interviews and stuff? Am I supposed to be looking forward to anything?

The person who made this topic doesn't want to be told "oh, a 34 is good enough, you should stop trying". S/he wants advice on how to improve.

Anyway, I'm in pretty much the same boat as you - I got a 34 on the June ACT, but I'm hoping for a 35-36 when I retake it in the fall. I agree, though, that once you reach a certain point, it becomes more about focusing during the tests. The difference between a 34 and a 36 is 99% luck. As for improving your science score, what I've been doing is looking over basic rules of physics, chemistry, and biology, so that I become less dependent on reading the passage. It helps if you go in with the science knowledge, even if you're supposedly able to deduct all the answers from the passages.

pray the curve works in your favor
