I am applying to Duke Kunshan University in China. In their app, they ask to identify what a student wants to study while at college, and 4 answers are possible: Natural Science, Social Science, Arts and Humanities, and To Be Decided. There is no question for “second-choice direction” or something like that.
In my case, I am going to focus on Arts and Humanities but am still planning on taking a few biology courses, at least in my first year (btw, students at Duke Kunshan choose their major in their second year).
Does the question that asks to choose only one of those areas mean that students can’t generally take courses in quite different areas at Duke Kunshan? (I thought that since it is a collaboration of American and Chinese systems, that could be possible.)
Any information will be appreciated. Also, if you know any place I can read about it, I would be grateful if you shared.
Hi! I’m a current student at DKU and I think I can answer your question. It is definitely possible to take classes outside of your intended area of study. DKU’s curriculum is designed so that students take both core classes, which are specific to their major, as well as elective courses to explore other subjects. For example, so far in my first year as an undergraduate, I have taken a range of history, philosophy, math, and science courses. If you want some more information about DKU’s curriculum, their website provides more details: http://undergrad.dukekunshan.edu.cn/core-components/
