Taking classes at other 5CC schools

Back at the start of the year, I applied to Mouht Holyoke on a whim because the application was free and I didn't have to write a new essay. (To be honest, I took an essay I wrote for another woman's school and basically changed the names) However, now that I got accepted and got a good deal, I'm seriously considering attending the school. One thing I'm interested in is taking classes at the other consortium schools. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is it an easy process?

I’ve heard that it’s reasonably easy – I’m pretty sure there’s a section on their website/a whole site for just the consortium. I think you can take 2 5CC classes per semester after your first semester? Or something.

Main issue is transportation–you need to work around the bus schedule if you don’t have a car.

MHC, Hampshire, Amherst, and UMass are all on the same side of the river, basically along Rt. 116 (UMass near 116/Rt. 9) Smith is on the other side of the river–little tougher to get to.

D is at MHC. Had no problems getting to UMass and Hampshire for a class. Word is Amherst is a little difficult to get along with re: 5 college students.

Hey y’all! I’m a current senior and Admissions employee- I’ve taken a lot of classes at the other schools and most students take at least one class at one of the 5 colleges in their time at MHC. Most professors leave one or two spots open for 5-college students in their classes. You’re much more likely to get in to any class that might be harder to squeeze into (due to capacity or whatever) if you establish a personal connection with the professor- for example show up to their office hours sometime before the final registration or shoot them an email asking permission to be in the class. I’ve never had a problem with any of my 5-college classes and I’ve gotten really close with a professor at Amherst and she treats me no differently than she does any of her other students. In fact, I applied for a job at Amherst for next year, and I got it! There are a lot of opportunities to join things at other schools, including classes, theater, clubs, and intramural teams.

Also we have a huge free bus system and it’s pretty easy to navigate once you get used to it!

D is currently a jr. she said it’s tricky navigating class scheduling to get to the other campuses.

Agree with patc.

D has taken courses at Hampshire and UMass, but had to allow lots of travel time, both before and after the off-campus class
