I have to take a few required classes online because of my interest in music and the fact that I am apart of my school’s STEM program (Project Lead the Way). These classes take up all three of my electives all four years. I’ve already started taking French online and I absolutely hate it. I forced myself to do this because it is necessary for college admissions and graduating high school. It is also my only known option of fitting everything into my schedule. My question is would colleges ignore the fact that I might take 2-3 years of a foreign language instead of 4 or should I toughen it out? I will be in the top choir at school and I am currently second chair cello of the top orchestra as a rising sophomore. The STEM program is also one of the only reasons I chose to stay at my home school because it is overcrowded. In the STEM program there are smaller class sizes, laptops, and the absence of (most) low performers. I don’t have any room in my regular schedule unless I replace AP Statistics with an elective senior year (Taking calculus BC as a junior). I am involved in many EC’s and volunteer during the school year. Would I be at a major disadvantage or should I take the four years of French?
What are some schools that you’re thinking of applying to? To make yourself an extremely competitive applicant I would at LEAST get to 4 years. I was the same way and didn’t want to get 4 years done, but I found out that some people even have 5.
I have thought about applying to Brown, NYU, Cornell, Stanford, University of Texas (cheap tuition and great graduate school), Bowdoin, Columbia, University of Chicago, and Duke. I have no idea and the list could go on, but those are some of the ones I’ve looked at. I don’t have to worry about the fifth year because my school only offers four. Would three years be more forgivable? I have other interests in things that don’t involve French at all. Right now it is a pain in the butt for me. I get bored easily.
If you’re applying to schools like Brown, Duke, and NYU- then I would def get 4 years done. I get bored easily too trust me, but that is not a valid reason when admissions officers typically look for 4 years.
I heard that it depends on what else.you do during high school. I know some kids who are heavily involved in music can miss a few years of certain classes. I just really need another option to taking this online by myself.
