Taking General Chemistry over summer to take Organic Chemistry during Freshman Year

I was thinking about taking general chemistry during the summer before my freshman year, so that I could take Organic Chemistry during my freshman year.

I’ve read that medical schools don’t like students taking pre-med requirement courses over the summer, but would it be okay for me to do this with general chemistry? I will take advanced chemistry courses later on.

Why the rush to get to ochem?

According to your other thread, you only scored a 3 on your AP Chem exam. This means you have some pretty serious holes in your gen chem knowledge. Do you really want to squeeze learning all of gen chem into 6-7 weeks?

I’d recommend against taking chemistry in the summer. 6 weeks gives you very little time to recover if you have one bad exam/quiz/homework/lab grade. As a pre med your grades are very important. Why risk starting off on the wrong foot?

P.S. You need to get your college’s permission to take summer classes at a different school. Not all colleges will accept transfer grades from another college.

If you are someone accepted ED to Columbia with a 3 on AP chem, you need to take the slowest possible chemistry path you can. Your chemistry background will be inferior to a significant portion of your peers.
