Taking Graduate Level Courses at Northeastern as an Undergrad. in Mathematics

Hi all,

I’m a prospective applicant to Northeastern university and just had a very quick question. I would like to pursue a math and physics double major and will have some advanced coursework in mathematics completed before the end of high school. More specifically, I’ll have completed the following:

  1. AP Calculus BC
  2. Linear Algebra
  3. Multivariable Calculus
  4. Differential Equations
  5. Introduction to Abstract Mathematics
  6. Introduction to Real Analysis

(for physics, I’ll just have completed AP Physics C: Mechanics and AP Physics C: E&M,so nothing beyond AP level there).

Therefore, I was wondering if math/science majors at Northeastern could comment on how flexible the program is and whether it’s possible to take graduate level courses while still an undergrad. I was browsing the course catalog and based upon what I’ll have completed, it looks like a course like math 5101: Analysis 1 would be a good place to start off with at Northeastern. However, that course and courses after it normally require graduate level status, which is why I’m wondering whether there’s flexibility to permit undegrads. to take these graduate level courses.

(By the way, if you are majoring in math/physics,in addition to the question above, I’d also really appreciate any general comments you have about your experience, professor accessibility/teaching, research & internship opportunities in math/science,etc. to get a better sense of Northeastern)

I’m assuming #5 and #6 are from JHU CTY? If Northeastern grants you credit for those courses, I see no reason for you not to get ahead.

I would look into the PlusOne program offered by the graduate school, which allows you to double count graduate credits with undergraduate credits and possibly accelerate your path to a master’s degree.

@AnEpicIndian , yes the last two are from JHU CTY!! By the way, if you’ve done any yourself, I’m very curious what you thought as I’m beginning my first (in linear algebra) this summer. Thanks for that information, and I’ll be sure to look into the PlusOne program.

Does anybody else have additional information/has taken graduate level courses in the department while still an undergrad.?

Yes, I have some close connections with the math department and know a number of math majors who are taking quite a few graduate-level courses as undergrads, even early on. I would contact the head faculty for math majors, Professor Jekel (jekel@neu.edu), to figure out what options would be available to you. He’s a nice guy. You could also use some of the extra space in your schedule to get involved in research in the math department, pursue an honors thesis, or add a minor like CS (really useful for math/physics).

@nanotechnology , thanks so much for that advice; that’s incredibly helpful. it’s good to hear that there are math majors doing grad. level courses.
