I guess you can consider what I drive to be kind of "luxury". I drive a 2009 saab 9-3, and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to take this car to lubbock and have it subjected to the bipolar weather and sand, or if I should get a car like a fusion and take that.

My main concern is random key scratches along my car from other students, is this a normal thing?

JTB021, Your instincts are accurate relative to Lubbock weather definitely wearing on a car’s appearence and keying being a risk. My son graduated from Tech a couple years ago and drove a used Camry during that time. The car was never “garaged” in the four seasons of weather in Lubbock (including a couple summers). The incessant wind (sometimes with sand particles) and sun faded the paint and dark materials (i.e., dark plastic parts, etc.). And his car did get keyed a couple times (once at a bar). After Tech, we got the car repainted (his dime) for commuting to his first job.

@Jackfly My hometown is Dallas, so about 5 hours away.

@Lonestardad - Yeah, I’ve only been to lubbock a few times but I haven’t spent more than a few days at a time so I’m not really sure what kind of damage I’d be looking at. I’m going to be renting a garage at the apartments I’m staying at up there so that I can hopefully salvage my car for however long I plan on living up there. Thanks for the advice!

Your car will not be considered a real luxury item at Tech because it is a car. I would be more concerned about it if I drove a new truck… someone might key it.

I have lived here a long time and drive a 65 Alfa Romeo Giulia. I have left it parked on the street overnight and even one time down in the depot district overnight never had a problem. My son however drives a 09 F250 King Ranch and has had it keyed. Go figure.

If you are worried about the weather. Pay for a parking garage parking spot across the stadium…but that probably is not the most convenient way to go about it.

Personally, a car is made to be driven and you should worry about it. If you are so worried about the weather doing something to it (which it shouldnt, just clean every 2 weeks or so)…just get a different car. Its a college campus with a bunch of people…don’t know if you will be keyed but like bumps should be expected.
