Taking two off-periods and taking classes online instead

Hello,

I would like your opinion on this matter: I want to take two off-periods and in place of those two off-periods, I will take two online classes. Do you think selective colleges, especially ivy leagues, will look down on this decision?

It depends on why you want to take the online classes instead of using your off periods to take a course offered within your school.

It also depends on what other courses you are taking.

SO if you are taking AP Calc, AP Lang, AP Bio , Honors History and want to take AP Psych and AP Econ, then sure!
But if you are not taking rigorous courses in your core classes then it wouldn’t help

Also are the online classes available at your HS? If so you should take the classes there.

If you are taking online classes because scheduling conflicts make their equivalents unavailable at your high school, ask your counselor if she will still note on your college report that you are taking the most rigorous schedule.

Hello,

my schedule is:

AP Chemistry
AP U.S Government
AP Calculus BC
AP Biology.

I know it sounds stupid but I want to take these classes because I like online classes and want to go at my pace.
Do you think my schedule is rigorous?

No English, no foreign language?

It sounds strange but I am graduating early and the two online classes I am taking are

AP English 3
AP English 4

I can not take a foreign language due to schedule conflicts.

I think it is fine. My HS senior daughter has two open periods as well - she is TAing for her physics teacher one hour and then taking an online Java programming class (there was a schedule conflict with AP Comp Sci Principles)

AP Chem
AP Gov (1 semester)
AP Macro (1 semester)
AP Calc BC
English Comp - Dual Enrollment (community college)
Java programming
PE (4 years required)

Why AP Bio and AP Chem at the same time?

Hello, bopper,

I don’t know, I guess I just wanted to take two science classes and I really don’t have a lot of options for classes.

They are very rigorious classes…i would talk to the teachers about if this is a good idea.

Online classes especially for something like AP English is not going to be received favorably, especially when your fellow applicants will be taking APLAC and APLit in face to face classes. Selective colleges want students who they think will engage in and out of the classroom, and taking online classes, especially in a class with discussions like english or history won’t look good, it just won’t.

Hello, theloniusmonk

The online classes are actually designed to be set up as a virtual classroom with multiple students participating in online discussions. I have talked to a few selective colleges and they said they are okay with it.
