Im applying for transfer for the fall of 2016 to NYU. Im currently a student at Indiana University. I was wondering if it would be risky if I talked about being gay. NYU is a very liberal and artsy school but can I expect the admissions committee to be the same? Im sure they gets tons of essays about kids talking about being gay. Im gonna talk about how IU is a school in the mid west and it how its not the most gay friendly institution. Im also gonna discuss how difficult it was for me to realize that Im gay and how hard it was and still is to accept myself and go after my true passion (music).
Why don’t you just discuss your true passion (your music)?
A college admissions essay is not therapy. And it never reflects well on people who trash the school/institution/employer they are presently associated with.
Im not trashing my school. The whole part of a transfer essay is to explain why someone wants to switch schools. There isn’t anything wrong with saying why my school isn’t for me. Im gonna say that theres a lack of a gay community. Not “my school is full of homophobes and snobby bitches”
Because I’m not trashing my school. The why transfer essay wants me to explain why I’m transferring. Discussing the lack of a gay community at my current school is not trashing its answering the question.
When u are trying to strike a new relationship, you’ll have better luck if you tell your date what you find attractive about him/her, rather than telling that person what you hated about your ex.
I got into NYU with an essay on being gay and growing up without queer role models in film and media, so I’m sure there’s a way you could swing this. If you’re transferring from a music program at IU to a music program at NYU, the driving force in your decision in NYU’s gay-friendly student body. That’s a reasonable thing to write about. I say go for it. I’d be happy to help you edit your essay if you need second opinions on anything.
