Talk about political affiliation in essay?

Would it be wise to say what my political preference is in my essay?

Well, it could either be interepreted as brave if the admissions officer is fair, or it could be mean a rejection if you get an admissions officer that is really political and has opposite beliefs than you. Its a gamble.

Personally, there was no way for me to hide my political affiliation because I worked on a campaign. I think if there's a good reason to write about it then go ahead. I have plenty of Republican friends, I don't know anyone who is only friends with members of their own party, so it should be fine!

Simply mentioning it wouldn't pose a problem. Now, if you wrote a passionate, scathing attack of the Bush administration's egregiously flawed attempts at reforming the Social Security system, you might offend someone (those Republicans have some thin skin). But simply mentioning it in passing, or talking about a political campaign you worked on, wouldn't hurt you.

haha! Rebublicans have thin skin? It's not Republicans you see whining about being called "girly men"

"those Republicans have some thin skin"

rolls up sleeves LET'S DO THIS!! runs to attack you

And what are you, CH? As long as you aren't a damn dirty commie (bah, I'm joking...communists need friends, too), you should be fine. I plastered my attendance at the Republican Convention all over the thing, so hopefully there's no unnecessary bias.

LOL PLEASE let's start a political debate. Then we can already have half of our peers ostracized next year when we're all at Georgetown together! ;)

You know that the first question everyone is going to ask each other isn't their names, but their party affiliation, right? Yeah, CH, my app was filled with references to being a part of my city's democratic central committee, so I wouldn't worry about it.

political clashings are inevitable

If Georgetown is as accepting as they say then it shouldn't be a problem at all. In DC especially they should want a balanced student body. Plus, it's really wrong for an admissions person to bring in their personal beliefs, but I know it happens. Just don't be obnoxious. I think they probably assumed I was a democrat, just by being from nyc. lol =)

I know that politics shouldn't be part of decisions, but you never know. The decision could be made subconsciously; that is, if an admissions officer noticed that someone is totally the opposite from his political beliefs and writes a strong essay, etc, etc, then he/she could unwittingly discount the applicant in other areas, and not admit them. I can't say I wouldn't if I were an admissions officer (BTW I'm a Republican :)).

I believe that's why John Lennon wrote a little song called "Imagine." We can just play it at orientation, and things will magically start to heal.

Imagine allllll the peeeoplllle.....
EVERYBODY NOW!
Livinggggggg for tooodaaaaa-aaaa-aaa-aaay voice cracks

oooh, i hate that song. lol

chuckles

Me, too.

Anyway, I can't wait to meet everybody on this board at Georgetown (assuming I get in). Hope to see everyone there.

crosses fingers

You republicans would hate that song, wouldn't you?

Haha... just kidding. I actually like the song, but for purely musical reasons. The meaning I could care less about it (mainly because I am a staunch capitalist :D).

oh yes, hurrah for capitalism. I am so surprised there are people who don't like that song. I thought it was the universal golden thread that linked all political backgrounds together!

I ended up not doing it, my essay turned out pretty nonpartisan I think.

Writing Why Georgetown was surprisingly easy! I think that's a good sign. I had a lot of good things to say and after writing it, I was like "wow I like them more than I knew!" Or maybe I'm a convincing writer? lol hopefully both are true.

This is great...

Everyone is so cordial on the site. As soon as internships are up for grabs, amybronte's going to start eating people alive.

hahaha i remember when i heard about that, man i especially liked that she randomly started doing a little strange jig or hoe down or whatever to like "be smooth" and cover it up or something, haha

btw, speaking of politics n such, im sooo stoked i just found out that im going to meet justice sandra day o'connor in a couple weeks! im goin with my school to DC for close-up for the inauguration, and somehow someone at my school's dad arranged for us to visit the supreme court and meet her!!! even tho i disagree with some of her judgements, she's still like a hero for me!
