Hello guys! As the title indicates, this thread is focused on any prospective applicant to the Class of 2021 at the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science. Feel free to post your thoughts, comments, tips, advice, expierences, etc. to help out future applicants.
This is also a “chance me” thread and I would like to share my stats with you guys on CC so you guys can judge my academic expierence so far and give me tips for maximizing my chances of getting accepted to TAMS. As you may have already guessed, I am a freshman who goes to a high school in Texas. Plus my grades are very bad compared to most people who apply. So, here goes:
7th and 8th grade report cards - I went to two different middle schools in two different school districts in Texas, and still have to get the report cards from my old school. Anyway, I had only two Bs out of all my classes; everything else was an A.
*High School Transcript - Haven’t gotten mine yet (I will get my mid-year transcript when I go to my high school as I am at the freshman center right now), but here are my classes so far and my selected classes for next year (including grades from semester 1):
So, considering my stats, what are my chances of getting accepted next year? What should I improve on, what is good, bad, etc. Thanks for reading this long post and have a good day
Hello! I’m also a prospective TAMS applicant for 2021. Some things that I think you should focus on are your grades. Although they aren’t terrible, I think that it would better if they were higher, especially the math grade. If you show improvement in your grades during 10th grade, I think TAMS will see that and appreciate it. This also increases your chance of acceptance! Make sure to study hard for the SAT as that is also very important. Good luck! I hope we both get accepted (fingers crossed)! I’ll put my stats up later when I find my report card.
Hi @creartivity! I’m sorry I couldn’t reply sooner this summers been really hectic for me! Nice to see someone else who will be applying! I’m going to study really hard and make sure I get all As this upcoming school year. Hopefully TAMS will appreciate that… Also I have been prepping for the SAT 2-3 hours everyday since June 2 and I’ve been getting 1400s, once a low 1300. Thank you for replying as well!
@NecesitoAyuda
Sorry for the late response; I’m not sure you’re supposed to submit SAT Subject Test scores. You should contact admissions regarding this.
Hi @ViveLaChina
If you never went to a middle school here in the US, then I urge you to contact tamsadmissions@unt.edu immediately.
I had a similar problem in that I went to 2 different middle schools in Texas and the online portal was only accepting one report card submission. I contacted the aforementioned email, however, and they worked it out with me. So contact them ASAP so they can give you further instruction.
I was wait listed for early decision 02/27/2019. Anyone know if decision will come within a couple of weeks or is it in May?
Please current TAMS students if you were waitlisted early decision -chime in.
I really want to attend TAMS but I’m not sure if I’ll get in due to my lack of awards. My stats follow: I swim competitively and I also play soccer. I was recognized by Duke Tips grand recognition ceremony: I scored a 27 on the ACT in 7th grade the sub section breakdown follows: 25 math, 25 english, 28 science, 30 reading. I’m homeschooled although I take a few classes at the local community college. The classes I’ve taken at the community college so far include Trigonometry, Microeconomics, Introduction to Ethics, American History, and Psychology. My best subjects are reading and science. I also volunteered at the library for a year. Due to COVID I wasn’t able to take the ACT again. Do you think I can get in TAMS. PLEASE HELP!
