TAP need parents information?

Hey, I just had a quick question. I just filed for TAP but it required me to input my parents information, but I’m an independent student with a child. Why did it require that information?

Because true independence for TAP does not happen until you are 35.
When are you starting school?

Do your parents make over 80K? if no you may still be eligible for TAP even if you use your parents income.
Did you apply for an excelsior scholarship? if yes and you are eligible, the scholarship will cover the balance of your tuition after PELL.

TAP (I assume OP means NYS FA) counts parent eligibility until age 35? I may not be remembering correctly, but I don’t think I had to use my parent’s income after age 21, although that might have been because I was in law school at that age. I always thought basic TAP required parent into till age 24, like federal aid. If age 35 is true, that changes what I have been telling my 25+ son about going back to school.

There have been a lot of changes to TAP since we went to college. The 35 year old before being fully independent has been in place for at least for longer than a decade that I know about .

You were an independent student attending grad/professional school. This is why you no longer needed your parent’s information.

If your 25 year old lives in your home (even if he is paying rent), he is a dependent student for NYS aid
