I know the Ivies and HYPSM are seen as 'target' schools but what are the chances of grads from schools that are top-30 or so but not elite? I'm thinking Notre Dame, USC, UCLA, UMich, Berkeley, UVA, Georgetown just to name a few.

Do students who study overseas (non-US universities) stand much of a chance of getting into IB positions? I am considering studying in the UK and not many British schools are seen to be at the level of the Ivies, with the exception of Oxbridge, LSE and Imperial. Outside of these four, how do schools like the University of Manchester and University of Edinburgh rank? What are the perceived reputations of grads from these schools and how employable are they in the US?

All of those schools place very well on the street. In fact, they might be even more represented than some of the "lower" Ivies because of their undergraduate business programs.

Cornell doesn't do that badly either :), kids from the Hotel school are getting internship at Goldman this year. My D told me many of her friends are getting meaningful internships. Few seniors graduating this year with job offers are asked to start later (like 2010).

cornell and michigan have top undergrad business programs which help with their recruitment. cornell has good representation at most banks, but obviously not as much as Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, Penn.

CMU Tepper does quite well now that some of the big dogs have died. PNC/Barclays/Citi/UBS have hired many of my junior/senior friends for Ibanking.

I wouldn't say thriving but UBS for Ibanking sure beats my Columbia friend selling insurance this summer. I'd take Barclays IBD over government work for Booz Allen, that's for sure. I mean, what are you gonna apply to, Lehman and Merrill?

PS: I'm at Goldman Sachs and Tepper has consistent numbers for quantitative positions that are nearly uneffected by the economy or are even thriving, such as risk management, derivatives, operations, research, consulting, etc.

Without a doubt, HYPS + Wharton are targets, but I'm not so sure they recruit that heavily from MIT for IB. Maybe more so for S&T, I would think. Anyway, Haas, Georgetown, Duke, lower Ivies, Stern, UChicago, and Northwestern all do really well too.

People have posted lists of target schools here on CC.

I know that LSE, OXbridge, Bocconi (italy) and many other schools in europe are target schools for I-banks like merril Lynch, but I don't know if they position in the US or only in Europe. Does anyone know whether they position in the US from these schools?
