Tax form

I asked this question on the financial aid board. Got 67 views but no replies. I hope a parent knows what I need.

I have almost a full ride scholarship, so I would like to know:

What is the name of the tax form that I need to file to report the amount that is left after tuition & fees?

You can report ot on whichever type of tax return you file - a 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ. It is included with earned income and next to earned income you enter sch and the amount of earned income that was from taxable scholarships/grants.

If you use tax software it will do this for you. The IRS has links to free online software for people that have fairly low incomes and simple returns.

You only need to do a return if your total income (including the taxable portion of grants/scholarships) is high enough that you are required to file a return.

You probably owe state taxes on it, too, and have to file a state tax return. More than one, perhaps, if you go to college in a different state than where you live.

You college financial aid office should be able to help you figure out where and what you need to file (and pay!).

Not sure what exactly you are asking because of how your question was worded - the form you will RECEIVE from the school is called a 1098-T. You use the information on that form to file your taxes on the 1040 (or 1040A or 1040EZ).
