TCNJ vs SUNY Binghamton???

@collegekid123457 I would say that TCNJ is known and respected but from what I see SUNY Binghamton has more or graduates working in NYC. But I would not use unsubstantiated statements or anecdotal information to make a decision, I’d try to talk to career placement, ask the question of business school deans etc. and see what you can get a first hand sense about where b-school graduates get placed from both schools. As I said before, you have are choosing between two excellent peer universities so it is all good.

one, TCNJ compares very favorable to Fordham (think it is actually stronger academically)and to Bucknell as well as nova. But with the price tag of both Buck and Nova a lot more attention is drawn their way. If you consider value, TCNJ has them beat by wide margins. Bing is also very good but its twice the size of TCNJ and a different experience. More nyc people know it because it is the flagship ny stateschool and graduates 15,000 students per year .

OP, considering you’re from NJ, go with Binghamton.

@stones3 “TCNJ is stronger than Fordham academically, and also on par with Bucknell and Villanova.”

Lol. Just lol.

15K/year? WOW! Enrollment: 16,896 (2015)

LBAD so do I need to post all the accolades for TCNJ yet again. Oh wait I have a new one. Its Chem department is also ranked in the top 23 in the entire country! that goes along with a top 20 accounting department, etx etc, etc,

@stones3 I highly question the legitimacy of these rankings.

@stone3 TCNJ is ranked #2 in NJ after Rutgers for accounting and is not listed in any ranking of accounting programs I have seen…Please reference the source of the rankings you refer to. I’m in no way disparaging the program, but I just don’t see it ranked where you do…

SUNY-B has a lot more alumni out in the working world. For the smartest baby boomers from NY, Binghamton was THE place to be. TCNJ was only recently Trenton State Teachers College. This is something you might want to consider because of alumni connections/job placement.

@happy1 has totally debunked you. TCNJ is a school that terribly overrates itself. Terribly.

TCNJ looks like it’s in a nice area

TCNJ and SUNY-B are in two different categories altogether. SUNY- B has an established nationally ranked program in business. TCNJ was primarily a teacher’s college (and it is still is part of the NJ state system of colleges). They have done a very good makeover and have respectable programs in various fields. If comparing the programs, I would say SUNY-B is more well-known and established. If comparing intangibles like feel, fit, fun etc., then it comes to a personal preference. Perhaps the faculty at TCNJ may be a bit more approachable than SUNY-B.

Also, just due to size, SUNY-B may have more course options than TCNJ. And TCNJ is known for being difficult to change majors.

I have often felt that Rowan is somewhat underrated in NJ. It’s all about perception, I guess.

Referenced indirectly previously, but worth emphasizing, Binghamton has the highest student SAT scores of any public university in a broad, populated geographical area (New York, all of New England, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware . . .). This statistic alone distinguishes the school to a fair extent.

basically agree, but keep in mind TCNJ IS nationally recognized top 20 accounting, top 23 Chem, top2 Ed,
top 60 Business, etc, also Barrons ranks it nationally as one of top 75 most competitive schools in the country.
Theres more to list but don’t want to hijack.

@stone3 I’ve asked before but can you provide the source for all of your TCNJ rankings. As I noted in an earlier post I do not see TCNJ ranked top 20 in accounting and I checked a number of rankings.

Both are good schools. If the costs are comparable, and you can afford either, then trust your gut and go with the school that is the best fit for you. We know plenty of kids who have graduated from TCNJ in recent years who have moved successfully into the workplace without issue. Binghamton is a great school as well. Ignore the postings from NJ kids who are prone to trashing NJ schools.

OP would also be well advised to ignore the postings from pretentious homers who are prone to making certain NJ schools seem better than they really are in a comical attempt to keep good students away from their dream of heading OOS.

I know students at both schools who are happy. I know successful graduates from both schools and work with many of them. Pick the school that is the better fit.

TCNJ has become an excellent school and has been excellent for at least 10-15 years. I’d rank it higher than Rutgers for many fields, especially for teaching/learning quality.
Bing has excellent students. The environment might be less comfortable but the academics will be very strong, as will peer quality.
Overall though both are strong public universities. Go and visit, sit on a class, talk with students, read the college paper, eat in the cafeteria, take notes on everything, and make up your mind based on all the information you have gathered.
Finally, look at net price.

wrt to another post mentioning Rowan:
Rowan has come a long way for STEM majors and would be preferable to NJIT in my opinion. However it’s still not strong enough for other fields.

What did you decide
?

@Redhawkmom Still haven’t officially decided but I’m 99% TCNJ!
