what is a likely?

It's a letter that's mailed before April 1st that says that the person is likely to get in. It's practically an acceptance letter.

do they do it for EA also?

and saibondy - lol so did you get it Before or After you were an athlete? were you recruited or did your coach say anything to you?

Yes. Again, they rarely send it to non-athletic recruits. Virtually 100% of the likely letters Harvard sends are to athletic recruits.

That may once have been true, but it is no longer.

By way of comparison, Dartmouth sends out about 600 "likelies", and Stanford just initiated a program for sending 161 likelies to a group of "desirables" split 50-50 between top academic achievers and top URMs who, they suspected, were being recruited by other top elites. The purpose of a "likely" is, hopefully, to gain a recruiting edge on the competition by being the first to say "we love you".

Stanford, of course, doesn't need to send likelies to jocks, as it gives out more athletic scholarships than any other school in america, and requires a commitment letter in exchange for the right to receive athletic scholarship money.

Harvard didn't send me a likely...:(

Actually, I've never read what the Harvard likely letter says...anyone have it lying around?

what's the average that harvard sends out? and do they ever send it to art and dance "desirables" ?

I believe they send out about 30 to 50 every year. It's not many.
