I am an international student and right now I have 2 teachers writing me recommendations. How many teacher recommendations do colleges usually prefer to receive? Does it hurt to ask a third teacher? What do you think?

Schools are generally quite clear about what recommendations they want - the number of teacher recommendations and if they have to come from specific subject areas (as they might for a specialized program). Two teacher recs is the most common though. Some will accept an additional recommendation or two, but ask yourself if this extra teacher is really going to present you in a different light from the other two. That ‘extra’ rec is usually provided by an employer, coach, church leader, or someone else who knows you in a capacity that your teachers wouldn’t.

Thank you, M’s Mom, for your input. It helped me to question if I needed the third letter of recommendation.
