Teaching our Children - What's wrong with greed?

It is a good trait in a person to be conscious of the resources they consume. It shows respect for both the earth and the people who have harnessed the resources of the earth to provide value to you as the end user of a product.

When I sense one of my children taking material goods for granted (being wasteful), I talk to them about how many people were responsible for that {fill in simple object here} coming into your posession and how many resources were used in creating that item. Then I point out the thousands of things around them and how many hundreds of thousands of people are responsible for your standard of living.

In that sense, you can call me “green” as well. I value the things I have and try to make the most of them. And by saving money (not buying things that are not valuable to me), I make capital available to more efficiently create value from our resources (both natural and human) going forward. Some of that is my investment in educating my children.

That’s a really good attitude. The world would be a much better place if more people realized that education is an incredibly valuable investment that offers significant returns.
