I’m a pretty undecided major; going back and forth between public policy, industrial design, and biology. I was wondering how hard tech makes it for the undecided majors to switch around, and when you formally have to declare. (also, how good is tech’s public policy program?? Is it good for getting into grad/law school?)
In my experience, switching majors is fairly easy at tech. All it really requires is a few meetings with advisers and some signed forms. As far as coming here undecided, you would not be the only one. I only warn you that if you do start as something like biology and then switch to something like public policy you could run into an issue of credits earned that will hold no weight. Once you use up your free elective space, the rest of the credits you have earned will ultimately go to waste. Tech is obviously a very STEM oriented school, so biology and industrial design degrees from here are typically pretty good. You just have to watch out if you want to go pre-med because GPAs are typically on the lower side. However, most med schools already know to expect that from tech. As far as public policy goes, I know there are plenty of public policy classes, but I have no clue about the major since I haven’t met anybody in it. I do know people who came here as pre-law and have done well with it. Tech is a great, well-respected school, but you just need to weigh your options and do whats best for you.
