I'm considering majoring in linguistics for undergrad... how is the department at Chicago? Strong areas, weak areas, popular major, etc. Any linguistics majors out there? ;)

Thanks!

The linguistics program is very strong, one of the best in the country. Someone I know who majored in it at UChicago said that it's more based on mathematically breaking down syntax than looking at the cognitive aspect. Hope that helps

I know someone in the Ph.D. program in linguistics who is not involved with computational linguistics. She has been spending 3 years in a South American jungle study some remote language. (Already offered a tenure track faculty position.) From what she says the department is strong across the board.

This might help, it describe the UG program: http://linguistics.uchicago.edu/undergraduate/files/UG-info-handout.pdf
