My S22 is trying to determine which major might most interest him. He’s a strong student with an aptitude for math and science, but seems disinterested in STEM. He’s very active and made it quite clear that he’d prefer a profession that requires minimal “desk time.”
I thought he might enjoy Sports Management, at least conceptually. He’s athletic and competes at a high level in his sport. I don’t know much about the major but I do have some connections in major league sports that may prove beneficial if he were to go this route.
Does anyone have experience with Sports Management? Would he be better off at a school like UMass where the major is housed within the Isenberg School of Management vs. schools like UConn or UofSC where it’s a part of the School of Education? Are there any strong D3 schools that offer the major? How are the employment prospects fresh out of school?
FWIW, the handful of kids I have known who have pulled off these jobs were rabid enthusiasts. They were also very go-getter types when it came to getting internships, networking, etc. Most pulled it off from schools where this wasn’t a major. They were just kids who were good at working the angles!
I read about a group of baseball statisticians who were hired out of a NESCAC school by one of the MLB franchises, so that’s a path for a math kid.
I know one kid who was an MLB recruit and who spent a couple years on the franchise’s farm teams before being offered a position in management for the franchise, but imo, that isn’t a replicable career path!
Some of the strong/stronger D3 soccer programs that offer the major (I’m probably missing some):
MA - Springfield
NJ - Montclair State
NY - Ithaca; Cortland
OH - Ohio Northern
PA - Messiah, York
VA - Lynchburg
