Tell me about University of South Florida

We are out of state and my daughter is very interested in attending school in Florida. So far, she has been accepted to University of Tampa and University of South Florida. She is hoping for UF or FSU, but both are a reach for her. She has also applied to Florida Atlantic University. We will visit once she hears back from all of the schools. USF doesn’t get much mention up in the NJ/PA area where we live. The cost differential between UT and USF is significant. Should we consider USF? How is the area, academic reputation, and campus life? Should we consider this school?

USF is fast rising, considered next after UF and FSU in the state although ranking doesn’t = great experience. The area is away from downtown. I stay near there for work and walk the campus. Cheaper hotels. Not the nicest area but I walk no problem.

U Tampa, in my opinion, doesn’t have a great rep. Lots of adjuncts. It was the first college my daughter eliminated because she joined the accepted student group Facebook and the first hour was all about partying and getting high.

Whether in reality one is better experience than the other is likely different by kid. One is a large public school and the other is mid size near downtown.

But reputationally, at least in Florida and I work with people who went to both, USF is far above. That your student got in is a solid achievement. It’s getting more and more difficult as they race up the rankings and get more and more looking to attend.

USF is a very solid, large public U that’s improving. Tampa is an easier admission and probably wealthier.

Did you also consider UCF? Both it and USF will be higher rated than FAU.
