I think they are pretty frazzled! At least you can probably read her a credit card # over the phone? I would have suggested, if I’d seen your post earlier, that she just drive to Philly from OH-- that’s what we often did rather than flying. The actual time spent is about the same, when you include ground transport and waiting around, and it’s less stressful because you control it.

Glassharmonica, congrats to your daughter for making the callbacks and surviving the whole experience! Sounds like a whirlwind frenzy!

Yes, congratulations! And it IS helpful to hear all these ‘you never know’ and ‘plan for anything’ stories.

.BTW Glassharmonica----I am an LA native and I still struggle with finding the entrance from the outside. With all the changes in the area, the access seems to change hourly. Googlemaps just can’t keep up. Neither can I.

Auditions last week at Westminster Choir College and Temple (Boyer School of Music).

WCC - a fascinating place! Absolutely beautiful & charming. It is SUCH a niche progam though - a perfect fit for some, probably far too narrow a focus for others. They kindly fit D in to audition on very little notice. The accompanist was great, auditioners were warm & encouraging. No sight singing, surprisingly. D is always disappointed when that happens. D was pretty impressed by the quality of the freshman choir that we were invited to watch rehearse.

Temple / Boyer - lots of vocalists & instrumentalist auditioners running around. Well organized, ran pretty much on time. This one did have a sight singing component. Everyone got a tote bag with “Boyer” on it, so it made it easy to spot other auditioners around campus & chat a little. Did a QA session which we did not attend, having just spent two days on campus. Lots of cheerful faculty & students around to answer questions. D felt good about her audition & this is currently her top choice. Here’s hoping!

Yay Temple! (One of my daughters is a senior there, although in art, not music.)

@glassharmonica - that’s great to hear. We really liked the campus, the program & the urban vibe. Very lively! We stayed at the Conwell Inn right on campus & aside from some interesting plumbing, it was terrific & so fun to be right in the middle of things. I was hoping D would fall in love, since it is such an exceptional bargain, & I think she did - she is sporting the Temple t-shirt to school today.

Hey Glass H. Actually she had some friends that did drive. Had I know a month earlier that she would not be trying to drive through a snowstorm, I probably would have considered letting her drive. However, it was 6 pm the night before her audition at noon the next day so she needed to get on the plane at that point. It turned out to be a fantastic trip and she had a great time seeing so many people she knows and going to La Traviata at AVA. She loves it at Curtis - - ahhh, too bad the odds are so against you. She is going back for AVA auditions on March 17 so she may drive.

MomOf2TeenGirls already posted about Peabody auditions last week but I will add a couple of things specific to our visit (violin undergrad).

Son’s audition wasn’t until Thursday so I think some of the hustle and bustle of audition week was over (thank goodness). I can now see why previous reports talk about it being a very confusing place (I believe someone compared it to Hogwarts with moving staircases). Went to all of the info sessions and they were very good and well organized. Couldn’t get a practice room the day before the audition but easy to get one on the day of audition. Audition itself was 10 minutes and he was asked to play a bit of each of his 4 pieces. He said there were 4 faculty in attendance. We attended some orchestra rehearsals and were impressed. All students I spoke with seemed to enjoy the school and made note of the supportive environment. Only a few snacks were offered at one of the info sessions, however there is a school cafe across the street and, of course, the cafeteria right on the campus.

We stayed at the Home2 Suites which was less than a 10 minute walk to Peabody. The Charm bus (free downtown bus) also has stops right by the hotel. Hotel was great. Very reasonable for a downtown hotel. Staff were friendly and hotel was very clean. Free hot and cold breakfast. Son practiced in hotel with no difficulty (with and without mute).

We took the light rail from the airport to downtown and then a quick cab ride to the hotel. Easy to do and much cheaper than a shuttle or cab. On the way back to the airport we took a cab to Penn Station and caught the Marc train. Also a cheap (and quick) ride.

Right now we are in LA for his audition tomorrow at Colburn. Have been here a couple of days and he has had a lesson with one of the faculty, a rehearsal with an accompanist and he has been able to practice at the school. Very impressed with their facilities. Staying at Miyako Hotel which has also turned out to be a wonderful hotel. It is about a 15 minute walk to the school or a short cab ride. Once again S has been able to practice at the hotel with no difficulty (without mute).

To anyone auditioning at Juilliard next week. Check your spam folder in email. They have sent information regarding the upcoming winter storm and who to contact if you can’t get there.

We are done with auditions! Son finished this morning at Juilliard. He felt it was one of his best auditions, so it makes me happy to have him finish on such a positive note It will feel good to get home tomorrow! Now the long wait begins.

Any tips MWstringmom? We will be there this week.

MWstringmom, there must have been something in the air at Juilliard today–my S said his audition this afternoon was his best one yet. It was so great to hear his happy voice on the phone. :)

Yes Clarimom! When they are happy it makes me happy!

This was our first time visiting NYC so we are complete newbies! We arrived on Sunday afternoon in time to check into the hotel before son’s rehearsal with his Juilliard accompanist. We stopped for a quick bite to eat @ Indie which was right across the street from the entrance to Juilliard. It was fun to sit right at the window and watch all of the auditioning students go in & out!

The accompanist was excellent! My son was very pleased with the time he took to go over things and he says he followed him really well. He did charge a $50 rehearsal fee which we were happy to pay. It was also great to learn where all of the practice rooms were before audition day (anywhere you can find on the 4th floor). Juilliard allows auditioning students to practice in the Juilliard practice rooms during audition week after 5:00 PM so Son got in a little practice time on his own on Sunday night as well.

We got up early this morning to ensure that he would be able to find a practice room & it worked out great! We arrived shortly after 8:00, checked in and he was able to find a practice room right away. I get the feeling that access to practice rooms wasn’t so easy later in the day.

He was instructed to report to his audition area 1 hour before his assigned audition time. Once there he was assigned to a practice room for about 30 minutes before his audition.

After his audition, there was a lunch with the viola faculty for all auditioning Violists where they had a chance to meet the faculty. I don’t think this is the norm for most majors.

There was a student panel / question & answer session @ 11:30 followed by a tour of the residence halls. We actually missed the residence hall tour because it coincided with his audition time. They also offer a Juilliard tour @ 7:00PM each night during audition week.

Good luck Scubachick! And to all of you auditioning at Juilliard this week!

My daughter also had her audition at Juilliard this afternoon. It was a very warm, pleasant experience with the viola faculty. She texted me that she felt it went very well. Three down, two more to go!

What is it with the viola? The faculty members are always the sweetest around and violists are usually the most
laid back, friendliest members of the bunch. Bottle it folks, and pass it around!

Mannes done

Lost Internet. To finish post. Very low key. Plenty of practice rooms. Snacks. Voice was panel of 8 in concert hall. First song, singers choice. Second panel chooses. No theory or placement tests for UG. They had tours of the New School but it was during her audition time. Again, very informal. Lots is students around to direct you and answer questions.

Juilliard audition today for voice. Did not get callback, but that’s ok, just glad to get the chance.
I will report on the day for students looking at next year. The atmosphere was more formal than other schools. Parents may not leave the lobby area. There was no reception area. There was a Q and A with students and administration and facility tours.
Students are asked to chose an accompanist about a week before auditions and to plan to meet them prior to auditions for a small rehearsal fee. So, be sure to plan to arrive early the day before the audition.
Students are given an assigned warm up room 30 min prior to audition. Then the audition is for a large faculty panel. Singer chooses first song. Then they pick second and possibly third song. No interview or theory testing. Around 5:30 they post the call back list. Those called back do the call backs that evening. Today about 30 singers auditioned and 8 got callbacks. They expect to admit 8-12 from 2 days of auditions.
The callback experience makes for a stressful day, but at least now we can focus on her other choices.

We had CAR TROUBLE at Bard! Car would not start at all. My parents drove down to Kingston from Albany and brought us their second car. Audition on Sunday went great. Then on Monday morning had the car towed to a dealership, then had the starter repaired, then drove BACK to Albany to drop off my parent’s car, then drove home. GOt home at midnight last night. In some weird way, I think obsessing over the car trouble was a good thing – because it kept both of us from obsessing over the audition. We will see. The kids were SO nice there, and so smart! Weird campus tour – the girl didn’t show us a dorm room, but sat us down in a room in the library and gave us an opportunity to skim the senior theses that had been bound and were on the shelves of the room. My son loved it. He thought it was really different!
