Telluride Assocation Summer Program (TASP) 2014

Ellen Baer has informed me that results should be out by next Wednesday at the latest, so we have a short while to wait! :slight_smile: :-c

Iā€™m hoping to find an internship if TASP doesnā€™t pan outā€¦ How about you guys? Which programs were your favorites?

I also applied to CMUā€™s Summer Programs for Diversity, but that has a super low acceptance rate as well so Iā€™ll most likely be doing some volunteering locally and working on college things this summer (yikes)

Also, according to the threads of the past 3 yearsā€™ TASPs (yeah, Iā€™m a little obsessive) the results have always come out on the last Tuesday of April, so 6 more days!
Telluride clearly likes Tuesdaysā€”finalist notification came out on a Tuesday as well.

I donā€™t have any backups. Telluride (or RSI) were the inly two things I cared for, but I didnā€™t apply to RSI because iā€™m more a humanities person so if TASP doesnā€™t work out, il probably do something independently

Ugh the waiting period is killing me

@Zaragozagozagozaā€Œ love the username. Are you a fĆŗtbol fan?

Iā€™ve been lurking around this thread for a while so I thought I might as well create an account and give back. You all have been a great help throughout the process and Iā€™m glad I have you to share this agonizing wait with :)

3 days guys. 3 days. We should guess what time on tuesday itā€™ll come out. My guess is 2:07

I think we all need to find some peace of mind and stop thinking about it (it is just as difficult for me, I promise)! This is so exciting and simultaneously mortifying that I have made myself find more productive ways of spending my time. For instance, I have been doing more research into the situation in Ukraine and Eastern Europe, and I have been reading novels that pertain (at least loosely) to the subject. In addition, I have been spending time outside gardening in this wonderful spring weather. I think it is really important that we all remember that even if we do not make it, which is perfectly plausible for all of us, that we still made it this far. :slight_smile: Not to say that rejection would not be crushing, but we have to have other endeavors to keep us going in the case that we are not accepted. Maybe we should shift the discussion to other fun activities in which we are involved? Just a thought. :)

I have a tough choice; if I get accepted to TASPs, do I take TASPs or MOSTEC from MIT?

Iā€™m planning on majoring in STEM, which MOSTEC would be better for, but I think TASPs is more prestigious and I like the idea of a residential program.

HELP ME DECIDE AHAAHAHAH

I know I shouldnā€™t think about this before TASPs decisions come out, but decisions come out Tuesday/Wednesday and I need to send MOSTEC my decision by Friday!

I think you should go to camp based on your interests as opposed to prestige :)

Haha Iā€™m nervous to find out! Iā€™ve never done something like this. I thought my interview went well, but everyone elseā€™s probably did too.

Trying to keep my mind elsewhere

Well I know, but I want to take into consideration how they would help me get into college.

They both meet my interests, but MOSTEC is more of my career interests and TASPs is more of my creative interests.

see my dilemma?

I reallly want to go to TASPs, but I think MOSTEC would be better for my chances at MIT (my dream school) since I would have contact with MIT admissions people

@kpalm1111 I completely agree with you. I just posted 3 days to spark conversation again. Ahahaha. Frankly, I havenā€™t thought too much of TASP. Iā€™ve been so busy with other things

I think TASP would generally help you with a lot of colleges, but MOSTEC will probably help you more with MIT specifically.

If youā€™re sure thatā€™s your top choice, I think itā€™d be a good idea to get those connections. Your instructors can write you recommendations for MIT and even mentor you for projects for competitions such as Intel/Siemens

@SineSquareSaw My S is in the same situation, but he really has no interest in MOSTEC, so it is no contest. E2 would have been perfect because it is the week after TASP and he could have done both! If he doesnā€™t get TASP he will go to CMU, so MOSTEC still doesnā€™t fit into the equation. I donā€™t know, MOSTEC seems like a crappy consolation prize but maybe there is more worth to it than we are aware of?

Do you actually think TASP helps for colleges though? Is it on the same echelon as RSI? I have heard mixed reviews on whether TASP counts as a relative ā€œhookā€ or not.

@ProudMomx3ā€Œ

I felt the same way, but considering how much contact MOSTEC students will have with MIT staff and the ability to get supplemental recommendations from the staff you work with, I think it has its own strengths. Especially if applying to MIT

@unproductiveā€Œ

It is hard to say. Obviously, there is a correlation between TASP alumni and great colleges, but that is because students who go to TASP are generally top-tier students regardless. It certainly does not hurt, but I feel the concept of ā€œhooksā€ is a bit unfounded.

Yes, the student who has a 4.0, 2200+ SAT, and went to RSI has a leg up above the guy with just a 4.0 and 2200 SAT, but it is hard to say if the student who went to RSI would have a leg above the guy who has the same stats but volunteered all summer.

I canā€™t stand this any longer

lol @ameripenā€Œ. Tuesday will come before you know it, trust me. Just donā€™t get your hopes too high (I know this is hard to do for me too) because even if you think you have a decent shot at it, you never want to read a rejection letter with high hopes. Letā€™s calm down and talk about something else.

If you could spend your summer in another country, where would it be, and why?

Iā€™d go to Afghanistan, and I would walk across the country, and it would be magical. You?
