I apologize if I came across as antagonistic and ignorant.

Quick questions:

Should the literary analysis be written informally or strictly following MLA guidelines?
What exactly counts as “recent honors and awards”? Are they supposed to be only academic?

^

I hope they aren’t required to be… all of mine were extracurricular/art related.

do your stats matter to TAsP
like class rank or GPA ?
I thought it was all based on essays…

I’d say somewhere in between; this is probably the most structured essay you’ll write, and it should be organized and focused well, but don’t feel like you have to follow any certain outline. Don’t sacrifice using your voice for the sake of orthodoxy.

I put journalistic, musical, and leadership awards from 10th and 11th grades in that section–so no, they don’t have to be strictly academic. List things that you feel are meaningful or show more about a certain side of you.

In short, no. I know there is a place for you to list your rank on the online application, but I don’t think you have to report your GPA until the interview round (which is now when you send your transcript). The most important part of the application is the essay portion, bar none; the rest of the application is meant to provide shading to the picture you paint with your essays. I suppose that shading can either enhance or distract from your picture, but if your essays are good, you’ll be fine.

@delaluna: I don’t think “informal” is the best way to approach that essay, but I wouldn’t worry too much about following a specific format. When you submit the essay it is in text-only format anyway.

just curious…
are you guys applying online or through the paper application?

online- i think the telluride website said they prefered online. it’s easier too. =)

For the lit analysis, would it make sense to use an essay that I used for English class, or does it have to be a fresh original one?

I haven’t seen this year’s essay questions yet, but last year Q#1 specifically asked for an original essay, never submitted for school.

Hey!

I live in NJ and am applying to TASP for Juniors. I just received my PSAT score, not good, not bad (214).

Will TASP send me an application for this score? Am I allowed to still apply, even if they don’t send it to me? And how would I access this application if I don’t get the necessary cut off score?

Oh wow…I just checked the website, where it is conveniently posted on the apply section…teehee sorry for wasting your time!!!

Woah, you have your PSAT scores already? I don’t think our school passes it out until January.

Wow, I saw that this program looked interesting and actually did some research. Now I’m thinking about applying. Here’s to hoping that my essays will be good enough, since my grades are mediocre.

Anyone have any cons for the program?

^The main con for me was that you essentially can’t do anything else for the summer. I gave up five weeks of French immersion to attend TASP, which would have helped a lot with my two French classes this year.

Another con, depending on how you look at it, is that you will probably not be friends with EVERYONE in your TASP. Inevitably something/someone will get on your nerves. And you are living with everyone for 6 weeks, so you should be able to tolerate people who aren’t your best friends.

I just got an application in the mail yesterday, supposedly based on my PSAT scores. I had heard about the program from a college counselor last year and am really excited to apply. The Cornell II looks awesome, especially because I am half Celtic and will be spending the first part of my summer in Ireland! One question for TASP alumni: I have seen many comments, both positive and negative, regarding cliques that form and a lack of diversity of thought. Was this something you noticed during your seminar? I’m so excited and anticipate starting my application over Christmas, as schoolwork is taking up the majority of my time right now!

Sounds fun! Make sure it won’t conflict with the program’s timeframe though; they require you to attend the program in its entirety.

Thanks Eric!! I’m really excited! And I will definitely be there for the whole seminar, if I get in of course. Otherwise it’s probably volunteering in a lab for me.

My TASP, personally, didn’t have a problem with cliques (we had A problem, which I’m not going to bring up here, but it wasn’t really a clique per se). I heard the same about Cornell '09. I know that there were clique issues in '08, though, and likely in the past.

Keilexandra, you have piqued my interest. If you are able/comfortable about doing so, can you PM me what the problem you experienced was? If not, I understand.
