Telluride Association Summer Program (TASP) 2010

Hi, TheBaus! Welcome to the TASPlication process (: You’re definitely not too late to apply–a lot of people haven’t (and probably won’t) even started yet. Wombatsoup, Keilexandra, et al. are all alumni of my TASP, and we’d be happy to answer any specific questions you might have. However, for the gist of what TASP is, I’d recommend going to these sections of the Telluride website, to see what the Association as well as its alumni have to say about TASP:
[Telluride Association: Our Programs: For High School Students: Summer Program for Juniors (TASP): FAQ](http://tellurideassociation.org/programs/high_school_students/tasp/tasp_faq.html)
[Telluride Association: Our Programs: For High School Students: Summer Program for Juniors (TASP): Ask a TASPer](http://tellurideassociation.org/programs/high_school_students/tasp/ask_a_tasper.html)

That should give you a pretty good idea, but again, don’t hesitate to ask us anything over PM or on this thread if you’re unsure of something or want a more personal response to a question asked on the website. We’re all super-hardcore-in-love with TASP and are always eager to help out the next generation of bleeding heart intellectuals.*

As far as your username, I wouldn’t recommend a CC-ish one. I did my initials and birthday, but really, keep it simple. They obviously won’t reject you if you have something other than your name, but “IxLOOOOVExedwardxcullenxLYKExZOMG” probably isn’t a good idea.

*UT factotum reference, ftw.

Mine was honestly “wombatso.” Worked for me haha.

username where?

The username for logging into the online application system. It’s not something to worry about.

What is app like this year?

I plan on applying , but I’ve got three days of school left and don’t want to get distracted, so I’m not just being lazy and not looking it up myself. Ok maybe a little lazy, lol

Question for the previous TASPers: Where do they conduct interviews? Do they come to you or you to them?

Thanks!

You go to them, but it’s done by region. I drove ~40 min; I’ve heard of people driving as much as 4 hours. They’ll also do a phone interview if necessary, but I wouldn’t recommend that for a variety of reasons if you have any choice.

@gbrasg

If you become a finalist, you will be contacted by a regional interviewer who lives at a relatively reasonable distance from you. He/she will most likely determine the location, whether it be at his/her house, a cafe, etc.

Good luck!

Alright thanks embeezy! I’m getting pretty pumped up about all of this, but I’m trying to restrain it… I’m so glad that they don’t look at much other than the essays. Let’s just say that I’m not as confident with other aspects of my resume.
I’ll definitely ask you guys questions whenever they pop up. Thanks for the help!

This thing is EXACTLY what I need. PLEASEEEE.

Lol, I’m the exact opposite - I wish they placed more weight on the resume and the GPA.

I have to agree with you there EricLee. I tend to be a good writer, at least in the microcosm of my school community, but would feel more comfortable if my application could include my resume, transcript, and such. Also, I got my letter about two or three weeks ago.

do we need teacher recs for this? i couldn’t find any teacher rec forms…

^Worry about that if/when you make it to the interview round. Anyway, IIRC last year there wasn’t an actual form to fill out, just instructions.

Some interviewers are pretty cool. Mine actually came out to somewhere close to me. I chose a place at the mall a few blocks down from my house, so it all worked out.

hey guys- tasp reject here. didnt make it to interview rounds, and it kind of hurt. yet, today, i edited my CC location. i am abysmally excited for the next four years. conclusion: TASP is a wonderful opportunity and those who participate are without a doubt very talented students. but, it is no way an indicator of anything more than the quality of the 6 essays you wrote (looking back, my essays werent that good and were actually old essays recycled to fit the prompts). with that said, enjoy the process!

edit- i realize i should post this later, but idk…i got too excited when editing my profile! haha

Do the professors who teach the seminars read our essays or are they just there to teach the seminars?

–To Space!!!
—O woe, the tears of time

I don’t think that the individuals actually teaching the seminar would read the essays composed by students, for several reasons. The essay prompts do not necessarily have to correspond with one’s interest (or disinterest) in a certain seminar topic, so it does not make sense for the professor to evaluate students. Um, and last time I checked, they are full-time faculty at major higher education institutions, so that would (should/could? I’m at a loss for the correct word here…) take precedence over reading tasplications.

More briefly, I think that the professors will not read the essays during the preliminary round of evaluation, but they might read some of accepted students (for their seminars), but I could be wrong.

I’m seriously excited to get started on my remaining essays! (I’ve completed the rough drafts of the conflict & issue ones). Good luck to all! I hope we all write our best essays capable!

My seminar professors read the applications of their students–i.e. all and only those who were accepted to their seminar.

^They did not evaluate or “grade” them (there are no grades at TASP); it was more of a way to get to know their students.

my essays might be more geared towards the seminar topics is that a good or bad thing ? Have previous taspers had more sucess with this?(2 essays, book/ any topic)
critical analysis of a fantasy book is it possible- i wonder ?

I got my TASP letter today- did anyone else?
