Telluride Association Summer Program (TASP) 2010

Essay number two, the whatever-you-want one, states that it “should not be a research paper.” Does that mean one shouldn’t put too many facts? Or just not cite other people’s opinions?

More the second thing than the first. It essentially means that they are looking for your critical thinking and ideas in that essay–not your ability to find and present information.

Give whatever background is necessary for them to understand you, but the primary focus of the essay should be your own ideas about the topic.

Okay, thanks!

I’m getting REALLY annoyed by this… can someone please help?

If you’re formatting a book list… for example:

Green Eggs and Ham, by Dr. Seuss

Do you do a comma after Green Eggs and Ham or no comma at all?

Books are underlined, to start. Also, no comma is needed.

Books are not supposed to be underlined, my friend. That’s such an elementary mistake, really.

Ah, I’m sorry I post nothing but questions on here. I’ll find something I know about after this and answer some questions!
How personal could(should) my conflict essay get? My conflict involves sex, alcohol, and virginity. Is that okay…?

Every style book I have (particularly APA) allows either, though I suppose it’s your choice. I’m personally partial to underlining after years of writing everything by hand.

Also, I appreciate the visual delineation between periodicals and novels it provides.

Yes but it’s better to italicize them.

Couldn’t resist posting lol.

Just wrote my first essay (future plans) and its coming to be around 800 words. How long are your essays? lol I wrote pretty informally, with contractions, colloquials and all. And not in the standard 5 paragraph structure. Is that okay or not preferred? Do ya’ll know who’ll be reading these essays?

All of my essays (3 so far) are over 1000 words. 2 pages, 12 font, TNR.

as long as you say what you need to, 800 is perfect. =)

Underline book titles when you’re writing them by hand (where italicizing isn’t really feasible, at least if you write like me), italicize in Word documents and such. Oy.

I’d err on the side of personal rather than graphic, if that makes sense. No gory details, but honesty is great if executed well.

It varies. Telluride Associates from all over the country will gather to have app reading “parties” (my term, heh) in major cities, and a lot of apps are read by the Telluride House at Cornell (a residential house for Telluridianness in college, basically). The ages, backgrounds, and professions of the readers varies a lot.

The essays don’t have to be standard 5 paragraph structure (yawn, IMO), though for the first I might be a bit more formal. My “whatever ya want” essay was also kind of formal, since it was persuasive, but really, use your voice, whatever that is. I’d advise against LOLing and <3ing in your essays, though…

2 of my essays are 5 paragraphs long. This wasn’t intentional, but nonetheless i think they turned out fine. Don’t be afraid to write in a way that makes your essay(s) the strongest.

@Embeezy: The no LOLings and <3siez would make Lauren very sad.

The Telluride House at University of Michigan also reads these essays.

@embeezy: much thanks
@Antagonist: even if there isn’t a UMich this year?

aight i’m out of this thread for now gl to allz

wow this thread is really helpful.

but compared to those conflicts, mine is really petty. a catfight almost haha…
The thing is, I don’t think I’ve really had major conflicts of that sort…ever. wow i feel inexperienced…

I still can’t even think of a conflict. I’ve really never had any serious conflict in my sheltered middle-class rural white boy life.

i know me too. living in suburbia, attending a private school…

plus my laissez faire attitude toward most social problems usually makes things boring. maybe I should be more dramatic? lol

Sometimes not having a conflict is a conflict in itself.
