Telluride Association Summer Program (TASP) 2010

I am confused. Who could possibly dislike Regina Spektor? I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who did.

Submitted yesterday night. What a relief! I like the topics most of you chose for your essays, they seem interesting. Hopefully i get an interview, if not, i would not fret too much. I tried my hardest now all i can do is wait.

@cheeseitz I HAVE
they make me sick, but they exist, and they are growing in number…
no, just kidding, but they do exist.

Something that’s semi-Regina like is Brooke Waggoner. I did concert photography for her back in November. You guys should totally check her out… “Heal for the Honey” and “Hush If You Must” are pretty good. More piano-y than Spektor but still an interesting listen. Something to do while we wait for the decisions, I guess.

@EricLee Listening to “Heal for the Honey.” I like it, finding new music to listen to is awesome. Thanks. Pandora is the best place to find stuff.

@odeepthought Everytime I find someone like that, I try to convince them otherwise. Normally they haven’t even heard of her before and are just saying that. I pull out my handy dandy ipod and make them listen. XD

I agree that everybody’s topics seem really interesting and intimidating. It just makes me want to go to tasp even more, to talk with people who think that way. If that makes sense :)

^ Hear, hear.

And…I don’t like Regina Spektor! D: don’t hurt me.

Embeezy is THE biggest Regina Spektor fan ever. It’s a shame she’s busy at the moment. She’d flip.

However, if any of you guys are huge Elliott Smith fans, we’ll be like, best friends and whatnot. Ah man, don’t get me started on that.

Realistically, how many of you guys think you’re going to get in?

I want TASP so bad but I just don’t know… I think I’m going to be extremely disappointed haha.

Ahhhh, I loveeee Regina Spektor and Elliott Smith! And on behalf of Obstinate, you should all check out Elliott Smith lulz ;)

TheBaus: I too reallyyyyyyyyyy want to so badly, but I won’t be surprised if I’m rejected. I think it would suck even more if we got to the interview stage and were then rejected. Honestly, I’m just keeping my expectations low and not particularly factoring it into my summer. That sliver of a chance though-- arghhhhh.

I’d really love to get in too, but I honestly can’t see how I could given the competition. It’s confusing, though, because I’m not sure exactly what they’re looking for in your essays.

[Beauty in the Breakdown: Happy.](http://resile.blogspot.com/2007/03/happy.html)

Although they’re not bad, I just can’t see how she became a finalist, especially if she was being compared to the same kind of people who roam this thread.

I’d really love to get in too. But on the other hand, I don’t know if I am the right type that they are looking for. Oh well.

I don’t think there’s a particular TASP archetype. Obviously we all really, really want to go. TASP is probably the most self-selecting program of any, because you just can’t apply if you’re not motivated. All of us have a fair chance…in the end, I guess a lot if it has to be down to luck, because I’m pretty damn sure there are more than 50 people who deserve to get in.

Yeah. I want to get in, but I’m excited to be here on the forum and hear about the people that do get it. Even if I don’t make it, their happiness will make me happy.

And then, when the 50 people actually do go to TASP I will be sad. XD

@yeoman: I think that in terms of survival of the fittest, the modern world is more concerned with the intellectually fit than the physically fit. Someone doesn’t need to be physically fit to reach an extremely influential position in their career field (unless it’s something like modelling, but that’s a different story.) I think that being the best physically would only apply in, as you pointed out, cases of natural disaster. However, if one could develop a way to avoid such a disaster or survive through it, wouldn’t that be a case of intellect trumping physical fitness? Also, since modern medicine has developed ways for many people with genetic disorders to live normal lifespans (or at least much longer than they would have several centuries ago) and have children of their own, inheritable genetic disorders are being passed down through generations instead of being wiped out due to natural selection. This was the point where I was felt as if I had to start defending myself (“I’m not suggesting that those with inheritable genetic disorders shouldn’t be able to have children, I’m just pointing it out in terms of lack of human evolution”).
Seminar order is UT Austin, Cornell I, Cornell II. What was yours?

And in terms of essay length, I doubt it’s a big deal. If you answered the essay prompt completely, they can’t fault you if you have too many or too few words.
My longest was my conflict essay, which was just under 1500 words, and my shortest was my future plans, which was only 700.

@antigone: Yeah, I totally agree that intellectual “fitness” is more important today than physical “fitness.” Even then though, the competition isn’t for survival or for mates – it’s mostly for status, money, and influence, so the more fit don’t really have an increased likelihood of reproducing. Anyway, I’m sure we could talk about this ad nauseam.

My seminar order was the same as yours, UT-Austin, Cornell I, Cornell II.

It says on the website that we will receive notification in early March. How early? Is it like 1st or 2nd of March or 10th of March?

I’m glad you agree, as I would hope most of our TASPers would.

False. Not everyone has a fair chance of getting into TASP, and I also believe that even though there isn’t a particular TASP archetype that there is a certain unspoken quality in all TASPers. As one of my CBTA friend says “I can definitely tell the difference between the TASPer housemembers and the Hill housemembers. It’s just a certain quality that TASPers have.”

@Happysunnyshine:
Early March means Early March. There isn’t a specific date listed because it changes from year to year. Two years ago they learned of interviews around March 8th, last year We learned around March 4th.

Keep in mind that TASP cares about diversity, in innumerable forms.

Okay guys, I’m going to stop visiting this thread, or it’ll pump up my expectations too much ): Good luck to everybody!
