Telluride Association Summer Program (TASP) 2012

I did my critical analysis on an essay instead of a book, so that made writing it a lot easier.

hey, can someone share how long their essays are? mine are mostly 700-800 words and i feel like theyre too short  any input would be great :D

@runnergirl, my essays are about 1300~ to 1400~ words. At first I thought I wouldn’t write that much, but when I started writing, I found that the words sort of flowed out on their own. But maybe that’s just me.

Is anyone else doing their critnal on a nonfiction work? The tricky part about mine is that it’s a little obscure, and pretty much everything there is to say about it has already been said by my author.

@xcbballuver nope, no SAT score reports. According to the website, we only need what’s on the application. If you are selected for an interview, then you would have to bring a recommendation and transcript but I don’t think SAT scores are necessary.

^praise the Lord! phew If that were the case, then I’d get rejected straight out! (~2100 SAT fail)

Seriously, though. Did anyone else pick a weird book? I don’t want you to share the title or anything, but I am asking: was it a risk/oddity as a choice in your opinion? Just wanted some reassurance that I’m not entirely alone in this harrowing process…

^ Is 2100 your idea of a fail?

2100 isn’t low. Gosh.

I’m not even doing mine on a book. It’s a relatively well-known article.

@darthbarf I’m writing my critnal on a memoir.

I think earlier in the thread, somebody mentioned that they did a graphic novel for their book choice. I read alt. comics probably way more often that I do novels, so I think I might do something similar with my book essay.

Just wondering, what exactly does intellectual interest mean?

I’m new to this site and I learned about TASP recently. I really do want to apply, but my school in Japan starts summer vacation from July 21st-ish, so even if a miracle occurs and I get accepted, I’m not sure if I can take over a MONTH off school (especially when it’s the midterm exam season.) Grrr however, this year is the last opportunity to apply for a summer program since I need to focus on studying for the university exam etc etc from next year. I’m 14 btw…
Should I apply??;

This program is for rising seniors (typically around 16-17 yrs old), so unless this summer is your last summer as a high schooler, then no, you don’t need to apply this year.

Would it be too much of a longshot to analyze a specific aspect of a tv show for the critical analysis? At this point, it’s what I feel would make my best essay…

Rising seniors?? I thought it was juniors…

It’s for current juniors who will be seniors in the 2012-2013 school year.

I’m not too sure what makes a good topic for the critical analysis. Is the role of women/ motherhood in a well known book a decent topic to analyze? thanks for your replies! :)

@Greenroses - I think as long as you have strong feelings and a stronger argument about whichever book you analyze, you should be fine. My personal thinking is that they are looking to see if we can generate opinions off of a text, and then defend and support those opinions - thus the “critical” aspect. I did my critnal on a book discussing the implications of modern military developments - a topic I feel strongly about.

T-minus ten days until the application deadline! How’s everyone doing?

Critnal: working on 2nd draft
Opinionated: 0% (Praying for a sudden epiphany…)
Conflict: Finished, doing some touch ups
Future: Finished, also may need some touch ups
Seminar: 0%
Book list: Done.

I can’t wait for January to be over.

I submitted my app today. I needed to be done with it. Friday the 13th - what a great day for a leap of faith.
