I really liked the idea of being 3 hours from home and in a city. They have jazz studies and the audition requirements seemed decently selective, but then I just saw something bad about them and that they were a waste of time. Are the teachers there good? Has anyone on this board went to school there? All information would be very very helpful.

Thanks!

BTW I plan on going there for jazz guitar performance/business.

Well, I auditioned there and got accepted for Vocal Performance and Music Ed but I'm still waiting back on other schools and haven't decided to attend yet...but I might be able to get you in touch with some of the jazz majors there. When you say business, are you referring to music business or regular business? I was considering a double degree in performance and biology but the admissions head told me it would be very difficult and not possible within four years most likely, in part due to the campus size and varied locations for biology classes and music classes. But I digress...

I have heard both negatives and positives regarding Temple's program. However, in terms of Jazz, I have only heard positives. The negatives I heard were only regarding the voice program, and in specific, certain teachers.

Did you find the previous Temple Thread? If not, here it is....

In our experience, politics is probably the only field that has more trash-talking than music, so I take everything I read and hear with a grain of salt.

It is very important for you to do your own homework, and that means visiting these schools, asking lots of questions, meeting teachers, getting sample lessons and sitting in on performances or studio classes. There are no shortcuts to figure out what the right options are for you. What is appropriate for one person is not necessarily appropriate for another. Then evaluate your findings with your teacher and other musicians who know you well.

My D applied to Temple two years ago as her "safety" option. If Temple had ended up as her only option, I don't think we would have been unhappy. When we looked at Temple, we did the tour, met with the music admissions director, as well as the advisor for performance majors. She also had 3 lessons with one teacher over the course of about 6 months. During the course of those lessons, they discussed the relative advantages and disadvantages of attending Temple. We also liked that it was affordable, in Philadelphia, and close to home and other family members.

rcmama, that is one of the best statements I have heard in a long time!! It made me laugh out loud! I think you should make a magnet with this saying and you will make millions, or at least enough for a year of tuition to a music school!! :D

We live just outside the Philly area, so many of our hs grads attend Temple and several of them go for music. I know of both voice and instrumental majors who love it there. My older d is convinced that any program is what you make of it. If it feels like a good fit, and you like what you see, then follow your feeling! D did that and she is very happy where she is now.

I'm not as familiar with the jazz program as the choral one, but I know a number of Temple grads who are outstanding musicians and loved the place.

So the jazz programs are good? I'm not entering for a while but auditions will be here next round and I just want the chance to be at one of the best jazz guitar colleges. When I heard about temple it sounded quite good. Are the guitar teachers good? Or what teachers/schools for guitar can you recommend? And I'm going to visit schools over the summer. I just want some info prior to visits. And also I plan on doing a double major = jazz performance(guitar) and a general business major. Thanks for all of your input everyone! If there's anything else to add.....I'd be thrilled! :)

There are a number of jazz specific threads, and if you use the search function you'll find them.

Compounding your search for schools will be the double degree (2 seperate disciplines, performance and business ; a double major combines two areas, like performance/music ed).

There are seperate threads accessible by searching about schools receptive of double degrees. There are both pros and cons. Ypu may want to look at this year's master acceptance thread pinned at the top and see some of the options of this year's candidates.

I can not speak for the whole program, but I have had experience watching one of the professors Dick Oatts (sax) as a guest artist and teacher. He was phenomenal working with the high school kids both in the master class and the concert the next day. If he is any indication of quality of the rest of the program you would be in very good company.

That being said one has to experience the program (sit in on class, take a sample lesson) to really judge if the school is a good fit. My S (a junior) spent some of his spring break visiting schools to try see which ones would be a good fit. His while he liked them all, his favorites changed post visit.
