Tensions With Parents Over College Choice (and May 1st is 2 days away)

Alright, so I'll admit, I went through a bit of a senior slide 3rd quarter as some seniors do. I got 4 A's, 1 B, and 1 D (in English which is my weakest subject). After seeing my report card, my parents gave me three options:

1) Go to UMass-Amherst which is free for me since I have a state scholarship and it's very close to home which I assume they like since it's close to home and they can keep an eye on me and save money if I tank out of college. This is the last place that I would go. I can't stand the school and would hate my life if I were to go there next year
2) Go to Purdue since every engineer my dad works with says that it is the best place to study engineering. Would prefer not to go there because of the cold weather and the fact that it is a big school. I'd say its 4th out of my 6 accepted schools.
3) Go to Virginia Tech and join the corps of cadets to get "disciplined". I really like Virginia Tech but it's not the school I wanna go to next year and as much as I think the corps of cadets is a good thing, it's not something I wanna join in college.

My dream school is definitely Clemson University and if I could I would send a deposit there right now. What should I do? and is there any way I can convince them that I'm not gonna be slacking off at school next year and let me go to Clemson?

Thanks!

It is ultimately your choice. Just take into consideration cost. If it is too expensive, you can always go to the cheaper school and transfer in for the Spring Semester.

Remember that you are at risk of having acceptances rescinded with that D. Call your schools and make sure they’re still options.

Purdue is not much colder than Umass if at all. It’s a great place for engineering and you get a big-time college experience which you won’t find at Umass.

I would go into your english teacher tomorrow and ask him/her what you can do to improve your grades. Ask if there is any paper you can rewrite, not to get a better grade, but to improve your skills and get feedback.

I would then tell my parents that I am taking steps to improve my english grade and explain what you have done.

I would explain that you really want to go to Clemson and tell them that you are willing to be grounded and not go out as much, do work around the house or anything that would give them comfort that you are taking this very seriously. If you have any money yourself, I would tell them that you are willing to pay a certain amount towards the school or even get a job to help them pay for it.

I don’t think I will get my admissions rescinded, the final grade is the only grade that goes out from my school to colleges and I had a B in English first semester and I have one more quarter to redeem myself so worse comes to worse, I’ll get a C in English which will be my lowest grade.

If I transfer into Clemson later, will they hold it against me that I rejected them in the first place?

and yeah I think at this point out of my parents choices, I’d go to Purdue…but still I think I prefer Clemson, they’re both good engineering schools.

Why are you so much in love with Clemson? What is it that appeals to you? Why are your parents opposed to Clemson? It is a great school but so is Purdue. I think you would love either place. Purdue is great for engineering and has a very high graduation rate. Purdue students seem to like it.

Purdue. You will like it and the weather is not that bad. (Not Chicago-ish)

collegehelp, when I visited Clemson, I knew that it was the school for me, I visited all the colleges I got accepted to and this was the place where I felt like I fit in the most. A couple students figured out that I was visiting and even stopped to ask me if I needed help finding anything and if I had any questions. Everyone was really friendly and I took a tour of the engineering facilities and I was satisfied.

I am constantly puzzled by why my parents are so opposed to Clemson. But then again they were opposed to NC State also when I suggested applying so I think it might be something they don’t like about the South.

Likely because you have better options for engineering. Clemson is relatively weak compared to Purdue.

Should’ve had this discussion with your parents weeks ago :-P

Purdue or fight your way for Clemson. Don’t go to Umass Amherst…

Oh you should have not gotten that D. There is NO excuse for that.

well I visited last week and I thought I was all set…until I got my report card and then it went downhill from Monday onwards

I won’t disagree that Purdue is a good school, I will definitely consider it (though Virginia Tech is slightly preferred). I did consider that Purdue was higher ranked out of all my options in engineering but I am going for civil engineering and Clemson is also a top 25 school for civil engineering so I decided that I would probably go to the place I loved the best. Also, if I decide not to go to engineering (many people drop out), Clemson has a higher overall rank than Purdue.

You mean your parents are going to force you to go to either UMass Amherst, Purdue, or VTech just because you got a D in English?

That makes no sense… Are they mad that you might not be able to handle college?

yep I’m serious my parents are really mad (and still currently still refuse to talk to me unless they have to) that I got a D in English for the 3rd quarter only, I got a B in English for the first 2 semesters, they claim that “habits never change, you’ll be in trouble once you get to college”…

Seriously though on a professional level. Purdue is the best option Va Tech would be 2nd

well I’ve been looking at the career centers for all of my schools and it seems that a lot of Purdue graduates get jobs in the Midwest, Virginia Tech and Clemson in the south, so I think that the schools are good for getting regional jobs? And most of Virginia Tech and Clemson graduates are hired by the same companies so it appears that VT and Clemson are equal

Pierre0913…i think you are misinformed clemson and your other schools WILL receive your final transcript. I know of a student who got an offer rescinded at the end of june during my senior year but he got an F not a D. Good luck though

no I know what you mean but the final transcript includes only the FINAL grade that I get in the class, the quarter grades are not shown, that means I still have time to redeem myself and if I do get a D in English 2nd semester, I will get a C in English for my final grade and that is my lowest grade so I am not too worried about getting my admissions rescinded.

I know a student that audited his entire second semester AP senior course load and still was not rescinded from college. He technically did not graduated from high school because audited credits technically are not real credits that can go towards graduation.

Focus your efforts on that specific class. I was nearly failing my AP English Literature and Comp. class but I ended up getting a C… it was fine. Talk to your teacher, she should be pretty lenient and give you a few extra opportunities to make it up since you are a senior and your life hangs in the balance. :D
