Texas Education Commissioner/Legislature make yet another ill-adivsed move!

Thanks givings! I will definitely talk to DS about this. My sons took the speech class in summer school, but DS#1 will almost definitely still need health. I will also check on the requirements for passing. SOOOOO much easier than taking the whole class.

I am assuming this shows up as a pass/fail class - no big deal. I don’t think a 1/2 credit non-AP class will change his GPA much.

No, it’s not pass/fail. At our district, the grade appears on the transcript, but does NOT get calculated into his GPA. That’s the beauty of it.

One of my D’s close friends who had nothing but 99’s and 100’s on her transcript made a 74 on the Health CBE. It looks kind of funny amidst all the other high numbers on her transcript, but nobody cared since it wasn’t averaged in. She is attending Stanford this fall.

Again, you might want to check on your school’s policy.

^^^
oops! You said that earlier! Sorry!

Here’s the decision our district came to (posted on the website yesterday) -

"Because these changes were announced after courses were set, teachers were hired, and master schedules created for the 2009-10 school year, Katy ISD is keeping in place the current, higher graduation requirements for students graduating in June 2010. Many districts in the area are taking the same approach. The students who are impacted this year are those seniors on the minimum plan who are now required to earn one credit of fine arts. Counselors are in the process of contacting these individual students to ensure that they have selected the correct courses to meet this year’s graduation requirements.

Katy ISD has convened a study group comprised of high school principals that will review the new graduation requirements and develop an implementation plan for the 2010-11 school year. The district anticipates having a plan by the end of the fall semester and will communicate this plan to parents and students once it is completed. "

So - DS#1 (rising senior) will still need to take Health. We looked into doing the Credit By Exam, but in our district, you have to pass the exam with a 90 to get credit. So he’ll just do the online/correspondence course. No real surprises here - except I feel bad for the kids who have to suddenly include a fine arts requirements their senior year.

As for DS#1 (rising junior) - it’s up in the air and that rather annoys me. They’ve have almost a month to “review” the new requirements. Now, a decision won’t be made until December!!!

I guess I am still PO’d that both sons had 3 years of Information Technology (Computer) classes in middle school (overseas), but the district here wouldn’t count it…even tho 8th graders here can take the technology class and have it count for HS credit. :(

I just got this email from Monica Martinez, Policy Director of the TEA (emphasis mine). Once again, the Texas legislature is just priceless:

So the Lege controlls the Recommended program, and the SBOE controlls the Minimum and Distinguished programs. Brilliant, folks.

Truly amazing!
