Texas Governor’s School Experience

I attended Texas Governor’s school at Lamar University over the summer of 2017. It was a free, three week program taught by univesity professors and college students. Overall, I would rate the camp 5/10.

Academics: 3/10. Overall, the courses offered were not rigorous at all. I took International Relations, Psycology of a Serial Killer, Art and Sculting, and Drama. The International Relations and Psycology of a Serial Killer courses were both taught by a middle school history teacher. He was very enthusiastic about the subjects, but all the information taught was easily accessible by a quick google search. Art and Sculpting was taught by a local artist. The class was fun and challenging. Drama was taught by a college student, who was also a house leader. It was fun but not structured nor informative. The classes were fun, but not high caliber.

Student Life: 7/10. The food was good, and accessible three times a day. The sleeping accommodations were good. Each person had their own room, with two people sharing a lobby with a mini fridge, shelf space and a microwave. Each floor of the dorms had one girl house and one boy house, along with two supervisors. However, although sleepovers weren’t permitted, there was no room checks or supervision. It was pretty much a free for all. i

I would recommend it if you’re looking for : laid back atmosphere, diversity, socialization, economic programs
I would NOT recommend it if you’re looking for : rigorous academics, college credit.
Hope this helps.

Was it hard to get in ?

No, I had several classmates who wrote only sentences for the application essays and got in.
