Texas Greek Life

I am interested in joining a fraternity at Texas. I was wondering what the costs were, and around how much it would be on average

Oh how I hate fratboys

Whatever - wastedxyears.

But to answer your question, it depends on the fraternity, but can run up to $5,000 per year for dues, and then add on around $1,000 a year scattered about for social dues and expenses.

I think you can look online at the Office of Greek life website and get the dues amounts, but not all are published. It will give you an idea though.

Thanks alot!

A friend’s son joined a fraternity several years back. The costs were incredible. Turns out the pledges were responsible for paying for the liquor/entertainment bill, which was pretty steep and extremely odd since he was under 21 at the time. He dropped out as it was a huge expense and the hazing was awful. Oh, if you pledge, don’t have a car on campus or you will become your brothers’ chauffer, too. Go into it with your eyes wide open. If this lifestyle appeals to you, go for it. You are an adult and its a free country.

As a side note: many of the GPA reports that Fraternities and Sororities report are rigged at UT. Trust me, I’ve heard from scholastic chairs of some frats here.

You will want to register with the IFC through the Texas Greek website. It is free, and you will get invited to events before school starts. Whether or not you choose to join a fraternity, you will get a head start on meeting people.

Roundup this weekend. Should be a good time

Is it possible (or desirable) to be in a sorority without drinking? I like the sisterhood aspect that sororities offer but I’m not a big fan of partying, to be honest.

I don’t drink and I’m joining… so are my friends. If you’re not a fan of partying then I suggest joining something like Texas Sweethearts or Darlin’s. It’s a spirit club that has a sisterhood aspect.

Thanks for the replies guys!
I’m going to roundup this weekend, and am gonna keep an open mind about everything. I’m rushing a few frats and it is apparently a great time to get alot of your questions answered!

Hook Em

1) In regards to the comment about grade reports, that’s complete BS. Those numbers are compiled by the Dean of Students office, it’s impossible to manipulate.
2) The costs are very high, about $5k a semester once you include additional costs
3) I know plenty of sorority girls who don’t drink, some houses have more of these girls than others so be up front with that aspect while you’re rushing and you’ll likely find the best fit.
4) You’re going to need to be on the rush list or guest list to get into parties at the bigger houses, it’s not just one giant open party.

If you are going to round-up, you need to be extra careful about drinking if you are underage…apparently they have really upped the security this year and have sent out warnings about zero tolerance for underage drinking…meaning MIP’s and IP’s etc. Not a good way to start out your college experience…
