Texas Tech or UT Austin? Which one?

The deadline is May 1, and I am 90% sure I want to go to UT Austin. The only other school I'm considering is Texas Tech, and the only reason is I'm scared of the size of UT. I've heard at Texas Tech you're just not a number, but Lubbock sucks and people have gotten robbed. I've visited both universities, and I like UT more. They are both the same price for me. My major is biology and I believe UT has received more recognition for their science program. For anyone who attends either university, why did you choose to go there?

“people have been robbed”. Well, this will happen at just about every college campus in America. There is no completely 100% safe campus. I think if you like UT better and it is the same price, then you should go to UT. If you get involved and join clubs then it will not seem so intimidating. Austin is a way better city than Lubbock.

Sorry, I’ve should’ve been more specific. I’ve read a person tried to break into a student’s car while they were still in it. Supposedly this happens at Texas Tech because of the neighborhood surrounding the university where there are many panhandlers.

You shouldn’t let one incident scare you off. Lubbock is not the best city, but many universities are located in undesirable places. There are panhandlers in Austin too, and I’m sure there have been some incidents like that there. I really don’t think Texas Tech is any more dangerous than UT.
But like I said, you should go to UT because you seem to like it more (and that is very important seeing as you will be spending the next 4 years there), and they have better programs. Especially go there if you would eventually like to work out of state, since it has a better reputation.
I will be attending UT, but in no way would I feel any more unsafe if I were to go to Tech. I’ve been to Lubbock many times, and people there are friendly. Every city and every college will have their own share of problems.

1) Most people come back from Lubbock with a couple diseases, if you catch my drift

2) Seriously? Go to UT dude.

Don’t worry about the size of UT. Sure, it will fell big but join clubs, make friends, study groups, maybe a frat if you’re into that, do intramural sports. “Big” is what you make of it. There are plenty of student organizations at UT, academic and non, that give you a small community within your large university.

Also Austin > Lubbock. The food man, the FOOD! :D

"…because of the neighborhood surrounding the university where there are many panhandlers."

Well, Lubbock IS in the panhandle

:)

Take it from a guy that goes to tech, lubbock is a horrible city

Well, I don’t think you’re really asking which school to go to. What you’re asking is about how to not feel overwhelmed and intimidated by UT and Austin, and for some reassurance.

This is what I can tell you. I’ve lived in Austin for over a year and a half. It’s really not that big if you’re like most people and pretty much stay within a ~5 mile radius of where you live. You’ll figure stuff out pretty quickly just out of necessity. Just give yourself extra time to get where you’re going in case you get lost, and you’ll be fine.

Second, it’s really not nice to stereotype the homeless/panhandlers. They’re not necessarily criminals; they’re just having a crap time in life. We have tons of homeless people here in Austin, and they’ll come right up to your car while you’re waiting at the light. There are also some people who raise funds for their church that way too, apparently. Anyway, all you have to do is smile and wave them off, or don’t give them any eye contact and put your hand up in the signal for “stop”, and they’ll leave you be. They won’t come over and try to yank your door open or anything like that. I’ll tell you it was a little unnerving the first few times that happened after I moved here since I’m not used to random people walking up to my car, but you just get used to it.

You’ll be fine, dude. Just take a nice deep breath, put on your grown up britches, and be happy that you’ve gotten this far. :)

UT is like a big city with lots of small neighborhoods. You’re not going to see all 50,000 students at once, except on football game days, which are awesome. There is always something going on. And Austin is a huge bonus! Keep in mind that so many students like Austin that they decide to STAY after they graduate.

I moved to Maine because I couldn’t take the hot summers, but I still miss Austin a lot, after many years away.

UT. It’s a no-brainer! UT is an elite school, and Austin is great. No one in his or her right mind would pick TT over UT.

^^ Gotta agree with the above statement, UT for sure. Better education, better city, better campus. I have friends that went to Tech and while they did say they liked it, I heard about the bad sides of Lubbock and I would say they are worse than UT. If you have the option you should def choose UT.

Hook’em!!!

I’m an aggie and going to tech would be a stupid decision. Please go to UT.
