I came across a thread in the College Life board taking about buying used/new textbooks for college. it seems like some people have already started hunting for books they will be using in the fall. However, I am kind confused. I dont even know what to major in not to mention knowing what courses to take other then required Englishs. Nevertheless, should I start looking for possibly useful textbooks anyway or waiting for more info from Dartmouth. anyone in the similar situation + Am I worried too much?
Last but not the least, I probably will not be able to go to the DOC trip due to a schedule conflict. Will I miss out on something important that the DOC trip has to offer? (like chances to meet new friends or getting to know the school better etc.)

You have to wait before you sign up for a course before you get the textbooks for that course. As far as doc trips go, I'm under the impression that they're a lot of fun and a good opportunity to meet new people. However, as you're not really directly selecting these people, they're not necessarily going to be your best friends. So, yeah, you're missing out on something but I wouldn't worry about it too much. There's still orientation.

i wouldnt say youre missing out on very much at all...the playing field is leveled by the end of orientation. as for classes, you dont really need to know anything until during orientation

do not buy any books, at least, until after you have signed up for classes. many students do not even buy them until after the 1st class to make sure they like the class. I can't imagine hunting around for textbooks now or why anyone would do that. Books for some classes will be for sale at the Dartmouth bookstore and books for many will be for sale at Wheelock books. I think both sell used books as well. In fact, I think for one of D's classes all she could get were used books. And at the end of the year she sold everything back.
