Textbooks: Buy, rent, download; where?

I remember buying my grad school textbooks at the school bookstore and then at the end of the semester "selling" them back for a pittance. Today there are so many options for students. Everyone says the bookstores in town are cheaper than the UD Bookstore, but are they that much cheaper to make it worth it? How about Amazon?

Is it worth it to buy new for a freshman to give them that "clean slate" feeling their first semester? Or just go used.

What about rental? My S used that option at UMich last semester and liked it.

Barnes & Nobel also has a free e-book textbook download program (Nook Study - but it doesn't work on the Nook) where students can download, read, highlight, take notes and other things on their PC or Mac, & books are supposed to be cheaper, anyone tried that?

For anyone going to Freshman Fest, what about buying them at the Book Exchange and having them delivered?

buy them used off amazon. don’t waste your time at the bookstore, just compare prices and you’ll realize it’s a rip off. if for some reason you think buying them from a bookstore in town is necessary go to liberman’s. but really, just buy them used off amazon.

there isn’t much benefit to buying them new, it’s kind of like a new car, as soon as you walk out of the store the value drops significantly and you’ll get the same amount as you would for an already used book when you sell them back.
