Okay, so I’ve been scheduling my courses for my first semester of college and making a schedule for the next four years (which will definitely change) to make sure I get all my major and pre-med requirements in. However, after a conversation with my advisor over the phone, he noted that since I took a dual enrollment English Comp. course in high school I didn’t need to take another comp course in college. Does anyone know if medical schools allow you to use dual enrollment/community college credits for English? I know AP credit is often frowned upon which is why I’m not sending in my Biology scores, but was wondering how they would view an English course taken my senior year of high school (I believe it will show up on my four year transcript) Should I just retake basic English comp? Should I find a different comp course that sounds interesting? Of course I’ll speak with a premed advisor as well but was just wondering if anyone on here had experience with this. Thanks so much!
If your dual enrollment generates a transcript from the CC that is separate from your HS transcript, then you can use the English course to satisfy or partially satisfy the writing requirement for med school enrollment.
When you go to apply to medical school you MUST send a transcript from the CC showing those dual enrollment credits even if your credit transfers to your new 4 year college.
Note that many med schools require TWO semesters of writing to fulfill admission requirements.
@WayOutWestMom Thank you, that’s really helpful. I do have a community college transcript although it only includes 3 classes so hopefully that will work. Good to know about sending the CC transcript to med schools I’ll have to make sure I keep that account updated so I can retrieve those in 3-4 years (hopefully).
My major requires a writing intensive anyways so I’ll definitely have the second semester covered.
Sounds like you’re all set.
Best wishes for your success!
@WayOutWestMom Thank you so much, you are so kind.
Based on information I’ve seen, you may want to plan to take two semesters of English/literature to satisfy the expectations for the full range of medical schools. Your decision as to whether to take an additional course in this area, then, may depend on the length of your dual enrollment class. Note that a WI class might not be recognized for this purpose.
