The 3.3 to 3.6 (GPA) Parents Thread

Thanks so much for the hope. She is applying to Chapman Creative Producing and we hope we have at least a 50% chance although we aren’t holding out any hope for merit aid which may just be the end of her dream because of the high costs.

Unfortunately,no video submission for business Creative Producing. She could have tried to shine with the video.

Crizello, have you looked at St Mary’s of California? It has a beautiful (!) campus in Moraga and I’ve known two very smart people who had wonderful experiences there. There is also Dominican University in San Rafael, a gorgeous historic campus with good programs. The University of San Francisco might also be a possibility, it’s worth a visit because the campus and location are unbeatable and academics are strong.

Crizello, have you looked at holy names univ? Its a small school in the Oakland hills.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions!

I checked out USF and that offers only a BS in Chemistry. My D is looking for a BA, so she will have room to do some teaching related credits. There are quite a few schools now that are incorporating some of the teacher credentialing work into the BA. With the BA she takes more science breadth and less higher level chemistry and math. She wants to be a middle school science teacher, thus the desire for breadth.

I’m going to check out the others today.

“The Chemistry curriculum is designed to show non-majors how chemistry impacts their lives and prepare Chemistry majors to enter a variety of fields, including pharmaceutical research, health care, K-12 education and environmental studies. Many of our graduates go on to medical school, dental school or graduate studies in chemistry and related fields.”

Has anyone applied to Virginia schools here? Would love my S to stay in- state for tuition reasons.

89wahoo: S applied early action to Christopher Newport University. Decision should come by or on Jan. 15. Awesome dormitories, best we’ve seen anywhere. Nice campus. We’re OOS.

Gunnerz- thank you. I took S14 to the doctor today and asked where he would like to look at schools over Spring Break. He named CNU right off the bat. I’m looking forward to seeing it; I hear great things about the school. Good luck to your son!

DS deferred at LMU-- also got no merit aid from Denver. Those were his top two so now he needs to regroup. Still no word from Redlands. I am not sure what is going on there since it has been almost 7 weeks and they said he would hear in 4-5 weeks, but probably not good. For a while we were getting all good news, so now the rest is coming.

Congrats to all who are getting acceptances!

SOmeone asked about Whittier a page back-- that was DS highest merit amount-- the cost is about 50k per year estimated but with merit cost comes down to about 28k. I think they are known for high merit aid, so it is worth considering if you are looking for a small school near LA

GOo d luck to everyone!

I thought this would be a great thread to ask a few questions:

My D14 really fits well in this category. She has a 3.6 UW GPA with a couple of APs from a competitive high school, and her expected SAT will probably be in the 1850 range (In Alg 2 in 11th grade, hoping to get high 500s to 600+/- on the math portion of the SAT.) Excellent writer (shooting for high 600s or 700+ on CR/Writing). She has an awesome EC sport that’s very unusual and may get her noticed. Zero desire to go into a STEM field–will probably apply for business/marketing major with a fashion merch minor.

D is interested in going to the East Coast or Midwest. We live in the PNW, originally from the midwest, but we’re not very familiar with East Coast schools. Looking for suggestions on colleges to visit this summer that could offer some merit or aid if they’re private schools. She wants a bigger school with lots of spirit (read: Div I sports) and Greek system (both G’mas and mother are sorority girls). Not interested in a small LAC with under 4,000 students. We’re definitely going to visit UW Wisconsin (strong legacy there) and Syracuse.

Considering D’s grades, probable test scores, and very strong EC and letters of rec, any suggestions on East Coast schools that might be a good fit? Thanks!

Heavylidded: D is planning to go for a business/marketing/retail management major with a possible fashion merchandising minor.

I picked this thread instead of the 3.0-3.3 thread is D’s current GPA is 3.63. GPA was 3.26 in 9th grade where she attended a very competitive and rigorous science-based middle school. She has a 3.88 UW GPA in each of the 3 semesters of HS, showing a great upward trend. Only one AP and one honors class this year to manage stress and allow time for a sport that often requires 5+ hours a day of practice and teaching younger teams.

She’s considering becoming a buyer/rep/writer in the fashion industry. Solid writer with great leadership and sales skills.

Thanks.

Wow, I don’t know much about that type of major (daughter is going for film major) so I cannot help you with potential ideas for your college visit list.

Good luck

Kees4me:Maybe consider one of the co-op schools like Northeastern. Though it doesn’t have Div 1 sports and its greek life is low-key, but she can mix real-world and academics over the course of her college career. The business school is competitive. Another option might be American (a test optional school), known for government majors, its business school is also strong. Greek life but not the D1 sports.

As you mentioned, Syracuse would be a solid fit (visit in the winter to see if she can take the climate)

NEU does have division 1 athletics.

Thanks for the NEU suggestion! I know zero about that school. Will so some research today and forward to D for her input.

Kent State in Ohio is supposed to have a good fashion program, certainly has athletics and Greek life.

Kees4me…

Your daughter should look at Iowa State University. Lots of school spirit in a great college town. And the shocker??? One of the better fashion design/mechandising programs in the country. They host one of the largest student run fashion shows in the country…2500 paid attendees…and bring back an alumni designer each year for the show. Business school is solid.

ISU is a bargain for OOS students at about $28,000 per year with merit aid also available.

Thanks for the suggestions. Father in law graduated from Iowa State, interestingly enough. Other surprising schools with good fashion departments include Oregon State and Washington State. Who knew? Both OSU and WSU are safety schools where she’s an automatic in with a 3.5+ GPA. WSU is a cost fall-back if merit $$$ doesn’t come in from OOS.
