The AP US History Study Thread

Isolationism.

What was the US foreign policy after WWII?

The U.S. was heavily isolationist after the Great War.

I would argue that, seeing as they went directly into the Korean War, Cold War and Vietnam War. I would answer that they were out to stop the spread of Communism. And for the sake of having a new question:

What was the TVA and what did they do?

The answer I was looking for was containment.

TVA stands for the Tennessee Valley Authority, which was one of FDR's New Deal reforms. It provided hydroelectric power and was run by the government, thus charging actual prices as opposed to the inflated prices that competitors were charging, making it necessary for other power companies to stop overcharging.

Who was the general in charge of the Korean War?

Douglass McArthur, but he was later fired by Truman.

Thomas Paine's pamphlet that condemned religious institutions?

Common Sense

What was funny about the TVA was they got sued by other power companies because they were "taking their business", even though the other companies hadnt run power through there yet, and had no intentions too

What Detriot priest was known for hosting radio shows that he would use to bash FDR?

Father Coughlin...they said that in Detriot so many ppl would listen to him with their windows down on sundays that it seemed like a giant surround sound system.

Q: This island was the site of a major WWII battle from June 3-6, 1942.

or did Yohe say that it sounded like surround sound

anyway, the answer is Midway...and i rhymed that

What did many military figures think would happen without the atomic bomb in Japan?

yeah it was basically Yohe

They thought defeating the enemy would require an invasion of the country, costing hundreds of thousands of American lives. However, they figured that the bomb would force the Japanese to surrender, thus forgoing an invasion.

Q: name the two Frenchmen who were send to the US to do a study of American prisions (they arrived May 12, 1831).

a second view was they thought Japan was already crippled and couldnt keep up with the war for another 6 months, providing an argument both for and against the bomb...recall the DBQ ziggyman

the Frenchys were Tocqueville and Beaumont, Tocqueville went on to write about American democracy

What woman fought to improve conditions for mental patients?, ironically she has an asylum named after her in Pittsburgh known as one of the most terrible places of its kind.

one of my favorite historic names, Dorothea Dix

Q: staying on the topic of reform, name the Dr. who is know for major reform for the blind, mainly a precursor to Braile's system of raised letters and the Perkins Institute.

oh ya, thats Dr Howe

Define the following, not indepth at all:
Great Migration
White Flight

The answer to my question was the Age of Reason.

Common sense challenged the authority of the British government and unified the colonial cause for independence.

The Age of Reason condemned religious institutions and instead, advocates Deism.

yay for Deism

Great Migration was blacks heading the cities in the 20s and 30s...then in the 50s the whites fled the cities to settle in the suburbs ("white flight").

I asked who reformed the blind in the early 1800s, who brought about reform for the deaf?

yeah, Birdman, this is getting kind of gay, answering each others questions back and forth. maybe we should give others some chances, considering we could just as easily do this on AIM

fight me

Honestly, as a past AP USH student, I have to admit, while you all seem to know a lot of intricate details about the nation's history, you really ought to be spending your time studying it in general context. A lot of the questions I've seen on this thread are WAY TOO SPECIFIC and you would NEVER see most of them on the AP exam in any way, shape, or form. So, I really think you should all devote your time to reviewing for the test. I remember at this time last year I was reviewing some chapters that my class didn't get through. My teacher gave us a really tight review schedule to follow with our AMSCO review books. Following this review schedule, as tough as it was, I got the only 5 in my entire school!

I'm not saying that this is a waste of time. But couldn't you maybe use your time a little more productively, considering how close May 5th is? In any case, kudos to all of you for knowing so many little details, and good luck to all of you on the AP exam! PM me if you need any help at all!
