Our daughters have used the Chinatown bus and it is a great deal. There is another one as well but I can’t remember the name but will post it when it comes back to me.
Ellen

Ellen??? On 9/08 , there is a post that you, Ellen, shares your posting with your spouse I believe? Mini can be a man sometimes. One post states that Mini is a father? Who or what the hec really posting???

Thanks Mini/Ellen
I’m a nervous wreck over this, but glad to hear your Ds were satisfied. We put "Plan B’’ into effect just in case— a walk and ticket purchase at the Greyhound Station. S’s homecoming is a surprise for H who has been away and is coming home tomorrow night as well. I know he’ll be thrilled to see his son.
The “Bolt Bus” seems pretty reliable, but it doesn’t go where we live.

TDR, TDR…I have to remember to call it that instead of “the cafeteria”. I am so terminally unhip.

D tells me her room was offered detripling today–a space is available on their floor. (I have no clue how all these spaces suddenly become available–'tis a mystery.) Now the three girls have to figure out who goes–could be quite an awkward conversation. I wonder if they get to check out the potential new roomie first? I guess that could be done under the guise of checking out the room itself. Meanwhile D is completely tied up through the weekend with two shows and several off campus commitments, so she may be one of the ones who stays simply by default.

Momma J:

The room my daughter was just detripled to had been empty all semester?? The other girl came from a triple also to this empty room.

What type of cuisine is Founding Fathers restaurant? I may try it. Can’t wait for parent’s weekend!!!

I meant Founding Farmers.

Check out their website: [Founding Farmers | True Food & Drink : Washington, DC](http://www.wearefoundingfarmers.com) Tells all. Looks wonderful.

Will have to check with D re: detripling…she is away for the weekend but may not have had the choice offered…from what we were told they try to do it on the same floor if possible, same dorm next…I think they are used to each other so I don’t know if the offer would be a good thing, or not! How to decide who goes…?

Interesting menu. Looks like nouvelle southern cuisine. It reminds me of Georgia Brown’s restaurant in D.C., which also has fried green tomatoes (as in the name of the movie), on the menu. Has anyone ever had those???

Yes, Despite being a native New Englander, my mother was from TN and she used to make them. I love them but they are a rarity…and oddity?..here.

Hi everyone. I’m a (mostly lurking) parent of a (happy) AU junior who’s currently studying abroad. I just wanted to pop in to say thanks for the Founding Farmers restaurant suggestion. I’ve checked out the website and the food sounds delicious, so I’ve bookmarked the site as a future dining destination for when D1 returns to DC next year.

Another suggestion when visiting your student in DC: If you happen to be a bookstore afficionado, there’s a really great independent bookstore in the DuPont Circle area, (DuPont Circle being a stop on the Metro Red Line) called Kramerbooks. The bookstore, itself, tends to be a bit crowded, but they have a wonderful selection of books there, as well a cafe that serves coffee, snacks and meals. When I had lunch there, the food was delicious, so there’s another (casual) dining possibility, as well.

It sounds like your kids are settling in relatively well at AU. I wish them an enjoyable and productive freshman year.:)

Husband and I are convinced now that AU is a party school. Daughter reported that the supposedly new “quiet roommate” has boys in the room every night from about 7:30 p.m. to around 10p.m. Does anyone actually study at this school or do we have the absolute worst luck on the planet? We are driving down to have to have a meeting with Housing and Dining personally. We are now paying the double room rate for this nonsense.

^ my D who was an excellent student in hs(3.9gpa/32act/8aps… etc) told me that she is having a lot of fun and that she is studying hard too!! she got an 34/35 in college writing and an 18.5/20 in another subject (i don’t remember)and she is also running for senator!! so i think if you want to study you can it’s depends on your D! it’s college life… your D needs to adjust herself to her new life not the other way around! Anyways i think it’s good that you go and have a meeting with the RA or the administation, go and see by yourself…

The restaurants where we ate lunch in August were both on Wisconsin Ave. Clyde’s and Chadwick’s are both in the Chevy Chase/Friendship Heights area. Clyde’s, part of a regional restaurant group, seemed similar to The Cheesecake Factory (minus the cheesecake); large restaurant, menu, portions and good food.
Clyde’s is a bar/tavern type restaurant-- smaller, interesting menu with outdoor dining and more good food. For dinner we went to Paolo in Georgetown, also on Wisconsin Ave. Italian food, eclectic menu with something for everyone—again very good. We didn’t have reservations but we went early on a summer night. I’m sure you’d need them now.

**For all those interested in the bus from Chinatown-- S made it home with no problems. The hardest part for him was finding the non-descript terminal, but was only a few blocks from the Redline metro. THe bus was clean and comfortable and seems an inexpensive way to travel, he ran into 2 HS from UMCP going home also. He said he would definitely use it again.
PM me if your interested n the name of the Bus line.

Thank you Ginger:

I agree about adjusting to college, but it seems we have just had some very bad luck with her getting assigned to living with some real partiers and party floors. the It also seems that many kids have way too much time on their hands. The parents on this thread talk more about extracurriculars, jobs, video games, party central in the rooms, eating at restaurants frequently, going to out of town Verizon concerts, teams, skating, parties, everything but the academics. I studied and wrote many papers my first year in college. I remember adjusting

to rigorous academics not partiers.

Cadmiured–you are driving to talk to someone at your daughter’s university because her roommate has visitors from 730pm to 10pm? They LEAVE at 10pm and you are unhappy??? You have serious mental problems that no visit with Housing and Dining will solve.

Hello5 Glad to hear that the bus trip worked out fine. I hoped your spouse enjoyed the surprise of having him home.
On the subject of academics. Our D, a sophomore, has had a very full academic schedule every semester, has a 3.9+ GPA and spends plenty of time studying. She has a work study job, where she has learned lots of new skills and still has time to go to the gym, hang out with friends, see her grandparents, go to concerts and other events. It is true that she is a very organized person.
We will be coming east to visit both of our daughters, the older one is in grad school on the east coast, and my family in DC the same weekend as the family weekend. I have been informed what few things we are supposed to attend. We did not get to FW for her freshman year. I can’t wait to see her. We are lucky and don’t need to find housing but I might have to try the Founding Farmers restaurant. Our D has been trying to talk me into taking her to her favorite restaurant The Lemon Tree, which is wonderful but wayyyyy out in Rockville.

Do many students find jobs on campus that aren’t work study? I’m thinking maybe the idea of juggling a job (10 hours/week) and the rest of life would be a good skill to begin mastering now. Not really interested in him going off campus for a better paying job. Is the career center the place to start? I’m going to spring my idea on him at Parent’s Weekend!!

^ my D is working for $ 8.5 an hour on campus 10 hours a week( i believe…) and she likes it but this semester she took only 15 credits… so she manages everything!

3boyz - there was a post earlier - probably waaay back now, with a link to student jobs on the AU website. My D got hers through that but its off campus (babysittin) but $14 an hour…
