The AU Parents Thread

One of the reasons my s decided to attend was his great merit aid award. We really liked the campus, not all classical architecture like some, but beautiful grounds and a great amphitheater. I believe the campus is a designated national arboretum.

Does anyone have any info on Leonard Hall? It looks like that’s where my son will be, according to his university college info. I read posts that have called it “cliquish”. Will a non-international student have a hard time fitting in there?

My d. is non-international student who chose Leonard; her roommate comes from a military base in Japan. She has LOVED living there - she always has available help for her Arabic homework; her floor has cooked all kinds of international foods together; she has had opportunity to use her Spanish. She and her roommate have chosen to spend a second year there.

Thanks Mini. My S has participated in many international programs and has maintained the friendships he made there. It sounds great, and he’ll be able to keep on with his french and spanish!
Are the dorms similar in space, amenities as the others? He’s going down in a few weeks so I guess he can check it out!

For anybody planning on attending the new student orientation…I just booked a 3.5 star hotel using Priceline . com for $60.00. I didn’t want to stay in a dorm (I think that was an option), and I didn’t want to drive home and back (we live about 90 minutes away.

If you do this, the nearest area to AU is Dupont Circle, although once you’re in the city, you’re not far from anything.

Also, try hotwire.com. I booked a 4-star hotel (the Capitol Hilton) for my parents at $99 a night. Pretty incredible deal.

Any ideas of what to do the night after our kids move in to the dorms? Our experience has been that the kids don’t want to do dinner with us, they want to be with their new friends that night.
We plan on dinner at one of our favorite DC restaurants, and then…
(fully expecting an early morning phone call asking ,“Can you please get me…”)

Good question
We were planning on heading out, but I hear University College has a reception for students and parents at 10:00. Only I haven’t been able to find out what day-Saturday or Sunday. Does anyone know??

My son’s in University College too, but I didn’t know about a reception–thanks! What dorm is your D in? My son is in Anderson.

S is in Leonard. Hopefully, we’ll get some info on the reception soon so we can make hotel reservations if necessary.

There is plenty to do in DC whether its theater or art or music…and wonderful places to eat. Just search online under DC tourism/restaurants…etc. I spent the 2ish days of orientation enjoying parts of the Smithsonian (also got caught in the Metro crash mess which was less memorable). I am delighted that my D has chosen AU if for no other reason (and really there are tons of great reasons for her to be there) because I love DC!!!

The UC Reception for new students and parents is on Sunday at 10am. I believe there is another reception for parents only at 12:30.

Thanks–I’ll make those hotel reservations!

Are we supposed to be sending in immunization/medical records? I don’t recall seeing any requests along that line. My son has had all of his immunizations (I think) and just had an eye doctor appointment. He still needs to get in to the dentist

I was puzzled by that too. From what I read on the Health Center site, Immunization forms (available on line) need to be filled out by the physician’s office, but medical forms/records are filled out by the student at their first visit to the Health Center. I think this is a highly unusual practice. I always had to have health forms filled out in advance of the students arrival at school.
If this is NOT correct, please someone, Let Me Know!! lol

I read it that way, too and was surprised. What if there is an emergency or urgent need and they have no medical info? My other D went to a slightly large university and she had to complete a lengthy medical history form.

I dropped off all forms, including immunization records, at the AU Health Center during my S’s orientation…even the ones they noted he could fill out during his first visit. Like you, I think it’s better to take care of it now instead of later.

Do you know if those are available on line?

Where would I find the immunization form?
Thanks!

The immunization and medical record forms are both on the Health Center site.
