"Maybe there is something to those schools with 100 years of tradition..."

Interesting story about starting a private, for-profit school in New York City.

Maybe they should rename the school ‘Helicopter-Parent Academy’. Does a day school that costs $43k a year really need to hold fundraiser bake sales?

Lord, I’d kill myself before attending a meeting at my kids’ school about whether they’re getting enough zucchini bread or whether the beans in the quesadillas come from BPA-free cans. Whatever they’re paying the administrators at that school, it’s not enough to have to put up with that nonsense.

Apparently, it is a for-profit school so can’t hold a fundraiser.
The bake sales must be for showing off baking skills of parents.

Or more likely, the baking skills of the parents’ housekeepers/personal chefs.

Avenue’s headmaster is Ty Tingley, the recent former principal at Phillips Exeter. Several excellent Exeter faculty have recently joined the Avenue’s faculty with him.

This story epitimizes Manhattan and why we moved out when our kids were born. I have seen first hand how warped kids at these schools end up. Parents are just trying to do the best by their kids but they should try to objectively read this NYT piece and ask themselves if this really the best way to raise their kids. Wonder what an AO would think about the type of kids who are output from schools like Avenues…

We live in Manhattan and I refused to tour Avenues for a few reasons… New school and it’s philosophy isn’t for us. I didn’t like how they were actively trying to recruit kids from our school (a private) and it so happened that those kids were all kids of celebs. None of them left our school for Avenues but that left a bad taste with me. The were a few more turns offs…but I’m sure after a few solid years, it may be the school it wants to be…once the kinks are worked out
