sushi, I would say it depends on what your student is interested in pursuing. Lots of state schools are great in one area or another (i.e., here in NYS, Stony Brook is great for science). It also depends on how many students your child wants in his school. Penn State was just too massive for my s to apply to last year. He went with the 5-10,000 range for state schools. They do exist!

Chart...I think he has a very good shot at Wisconsin. Just tke a little extra care with the essays and such. The AS program is fairly small and personal. Everyone gets good jobs. The other aspects of the school are awesome.

Acme, I'm actually a student. :) I actually want to study IR, but schools like Penn State are waaay tooo big for my liking.

Holy Cow, Jiff's mom, calm down! It's AUGUST. The poor counselor is in her first few days of a new job. The school system probably hasn't set up her email yet. Give her a week or two to settle in before you take her head off!

Sorry, but I work for a school with 1700 students. It takes a few days for things to fall into place. Believe it or not, there are a LOT of students that need help from Guidance, and the first few days are usually dedicated to straightening out schedule problems. It's not even September yet, there is plenty of time to get transcripts out, even for Early/Rolling admissions.

Yeah, I know the feeling. I'm dying to find out when transcripts will go out, but I know of kids who spent 45 minutes yesterday waiting to see their GC to get their classes right, so I need to make myself be patient.

I do know from years of experience with an underclassman that soon the GCs' full attention will turn to the seniors and no one else wil be able to get help with anything.

They REALLY need more people (like maybe three or four times as many people) to do the jobs that the GCs do.

Transcripts, teacher recs, gc recs, etc. will not go out from our hs until the last week of September at the earliest.

sushi error: D1 is an IR major and a couple of the smaller schools that she looked at are Clark University in Worcester, MA (a great school for B+ level students) and Goucher College right outside of Baltimore. She's a sophomore at American U., which also might be the right size for you.

Regarding sending out HS transcripts: Our high school also doesn't send out transcripts until around the last week in September.

If you say so...

D2's been getting nag emails from some of the colleges she's interested in telling her to submit her application materials now - the sooner the better.

Maybe they want to start earlier because of the large number of apps they had to crunch through last year.

I'll have her email the colleges to tell them her school won't get around to submitting the transcripts and recs for a few weeks because her new counselor has D2 and all of her other assigned seniors on hold for the time being while she adjusts, so they don't take the delay as a lack of interest on D2's part. Will it will matter if colleges get the transcripts and recs from our school for other students a few weeks before they get D2's?

Anyone have any luck at Penn State, Ohio State, UConn, Virginia as OOS B+ers?
[/quote]

I go to OSU (in state though) and know a few OOS B+'s. The standards are getting harder, but I still think it's worth a shot. I believe they all had good test scores, though, as an extra hook.

Jiff's mom--
what I did w/son's GC (huge school, she must have 400+ kids in her charge): we gave a 'cheat sheet' summary of son's non-school extra-curriculars w/brief explanation of why he didn't have stellar gpa one year (this idea I go from CC) to GC. Then I made up pre-addressed envelopes (stamped, addressed w/labels to the colleges & w/return address of the HS) for each rec she would be sending. I figured-she was only in a few days during the summer & is a busy young mom w/a new baby. Plus, son is applying to a ton of schools..just wanted to make it as administratively easy as possible for her & do whatever we could. I made up labels for the school registrar too. GC said the registrar "will love you for this."

Maybe something like that would help a new GC..

Oooh, Clark! I definitely want to check out the school and actually live an hour away from Worcester, so I would be close to home. How is the IR program there? Is it somewhat comparable with AU's, for example? I'm also going to check out Mount Holyoke since I live 10-15 minutes away. Honestly, right now, my top two choices are Mount Holyoke and American University. But, I'm not sure if I have a good shot at either school. I know AU's getting more and more selective.

My son & I visited Carthage College in Kenosha WI in July, he had received a mailing from them and had done some research and they had a neuropsychology double major he was interested in. He loved the place and so did I. We plan to visit again in Nov. when school is in session. I have search this site, found a little info and posts. Carthage was listed on USNWR #10 - mid-west liberal arts college and A+ college for B students. Does anyone know anything about Carthage? Thanks.

Any thoughts on University of Dallas? (I already know the campus is ugly.) I'm trying to find a school in commuting distance in case Son isn't ready to live away from home. (I don't think either TCU or SMU would be a good fit.)

Maybe something like that would help a new GC..

Yes, it would help - parents/students are already required to do that at our school. D2 has no choice but to wait until the new counselor is ready to begin processing her students' apps. D2's alerting the colleges about the delay since they've already begun receiving processed apps from our school's students.

missypie - do you mean the University of Dallas or the University of Texas - Dallas?

The University of Dallas in lovely Irving, Texas, nestled between state highway 183 and state highway 114. Actually, the look and desirablity of the general area should improve once Texas Stadium is torn down and the area is redeveloped.

missypie, the campus is not attractive but junior year sure is. It is a well respected school here in Tejas IMO. I'd check it out more closely.

Are you talking about Rome? I actually had a tiny something to do with them acquiring the property there.

I think Son would actually love the great texts focus at UD (the kid who read Dante on his own at 15).

<<Chartreuse: UW-M actually has a matrix on their admissions page where you can estimate your likelihood of admission:

http://www.admissions.wisc.edu/image...pectations.pdf >>

I really liked this matrix. Keeps you from guessing...

Wow. I wonder what's wrong with the 5% of kids in the upper left corner of the matrix who don't get admitted.
